Can this decision be appealed to the Supreme Court, or is that the final decision? (I am not a lawyer, obviously!)
. . . Maybe someone will take some action. That'd be awesome.
Once more from TCF, exaggerated claims about a salacious subject. You wasted my time. Again.
Sure does generate the hits though, huh?
Glenn, I think your column today raises the question, does citizenship matter? Is it worse for a country to deny its own citizens' human rights than it is for a country to deny foreigners' human rights? I'd say both are very very bad, but I believe a country denying its own citizens' rights is worse.
Imagine an America that does all the violent and atrocious things that it does now in respect to the human rights of non-Americans, only in addition, it's also a country where we citizens can't have this dialog, where our politically-active friends and family are jailed en mas and killed without charges, etc. That imaginary America is a worse place than the one we live in now. It is scary to me that with “material witness” detentions and -- on a very small scale -- military detentions of US citizens, the US seems to be walking along the edge of that precipice. Even scarier, institutions such as The Post seem blind to this threat.
The problem with The Post is that it endorses the idea that the US denying foreigners' human rights is acceptable while Iran denying its citizens' rights is not. I agree with you that this is a complete crock.
First of all, this was an altercation between a Black women and an Asian women. Nowhere does this article point that out.
Second, here's what happened, more serious than made out in this article:
0:35 Serena yells at the line judge, walking toward her.
0:51 Serena finishes yelling at the line judge, shakes her racket at her.
0:57 The line judge checks to make sure Serena is walking away, and then runs to the chair umpire to report the incident.
1:15 The line judge returns to sit down.
1:16 (one second later) Serena comes at the line judge AGAIN and the line judge runs back to the chair umpire as if she needs protection.
Check it out yourself (youtube link at sig).
So not only did Serena threaten the judge, but she came at her a second time, and it appears that the line judge thought it was to attack her. And why not? She's just threatened her life.
The inclusion of these facts--ones that you chose to omit--weaken your argument that this was racist and/or sexist.
You know Glenn, it it just bizarre to me how the portrayal of libertarians has changed in the last decade. It used to be that they were portrayed by MSM as right-of-center--less government is ideal, etc. Now this libertarian "distrust of the Executive branch" is being portrayed as lefty. Wow. And now the right-wingers are the ones who trust the government? Sometimes I feel like I've woken up in the middle of a post-911 Alice in Wonderland.
Glenn,
My only critique on this post is that it is a shame that it took until paragraph *7* to get to the meat, "This is a vital reason -- I'd say the central reason . . . "
A thesis statement at the top would be awesome and I think would help all your posts come across as more focused.
Also, I love the first letter in the comments by gavbrown. Indeed, the order might not be correct.
I am reminded of what McNamara said in the documentary The Fog of War: Only the losers are prosecuted for war crimes.
That was awesome. Especially the bit about leaks. (So many "leaks" are orchestrated these days, it's no wonder Klein's forgotten what a real one looks like.)
Also, I agree with a previous commenter (and Gandhi): "First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win."
Hey Tracy,
As a feminist, it's nice for me finally to agree with you. Usually I find your posts so overstated that I roll my eyes and move on, but yeah, this time I agree.
The reason Mr. Harvey gets some traction on this subject is that everyone knows (as I can see from the other letters) that sexuality adds complexity to friendships. Like many a pundit, Mr. Harvey takes this to the extreme and declares, "Men and women can't be friends!" Bam, we have a humorous and interesting (?) topic of discussion.
Is there a lesson here for you? Hope so.
I had hoped that you wouldn't have to write columns like this one once the Obama administration was in power, but I see that your job of chronicling the fall of the American republic is in tact. See you in the Gulag.
For me, this column is you doing your best work, and *you* are the free press.
...and thought I should say that. Thanks Glenn.
You document this hypocrisy while others seem to just take it in stride. Thank you.
