the dems eat their own, while we obsess about Cheney's bad aim
[Read the article: After another delay, Cheney says: I'm ready to help]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Why do we still care about this? Paul Hackett's out of the Ohio Senate race because the Democrats yanked support out from under him. Really, WTF? Dick Cheney's bad aim is not going to win the house or senate back for the democrats, nor will undercutting people like Hackett, who actually have a spine. Time to change the topic.

And speaking of Nazis.......
[Read the article: The Abu Ghraib files]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]When American forces liberated Dachau and Buchenwald, did we hose them down and then put them back in service? Honestly, if we have/had the moral high ground over Saddam and the rest of them, what were we doing with Abu Ghraib in the first place? The people who attack critics of Abu Ghraib and Gitmo just don't seem to get that no matter who rotten the enemy is, we have to hold ourselves to a higher standard. And reports that pickpockets and mentally retarded men were amongst those incarcerated doesn't support the whole "better fight them there then here" argument. Face it- we fucked up big time. 'nuff said.

much to do about nothing
[Read the article: The blogosphere's breast debate]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]This is by far the dumbest thing i've read all week. This year we've had clear cases of interference with the FDA over Plan B and the HPV vaccine approvals (real issues regarding women and society), and this is what Ann Althouse chooses to pick a fight over. Anyone who's been on a college campus over the last five years would argue that Valenti's outfit is frumpy by today's standards, and anyone who's endured a professional photographer for more than 30 seconds knows they twist you into all kinds of ridiculous poses and facial expressions.
The blogosphere is very proud of itself, but crap like this just provides more evidence that its nothing more than a soundingboard for people who otherwise would garner little attention in the real world. Read the right column of the Daou report sometime, and you'll find alot of angry lonely people. I pity them all.

all about the Tilton
[Read the article: Clinton's Iraq questioner: Her answer was "cold and calculated"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]So I've read/seen/heard about this exchange between this guy and Clinton on NPR, CNN, the networks, Salon -the list goes on. At this point, it seems to me that the reasons this story has legs has less to do w/the senator's predictable answer than the fact that the person asking the question promptly ran out and chased down every reporter/TV cameraman he could find. It wasn't even a particularly sophisticated question, just a Democratic version of the abortion acid test the Jesusland types throw at Republican candidates. Enough, already.

When the letters are as disturbing than the story
[Read the article: The private war of women soldiers]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Wow, I expect this kind of bile from the Free Republic folks, but not here.
While it mystifies me why women or gays would want to enter a profession where they'll be treated so poorly, if they make that decision, then they should be accorded the same respect as anyone else. That's a fantasy, and as we all know, the military has serious accountability issues. So good work, Salon- in two years the Washington Post will cover the same story, and maybe someone will get fired.

Hapless?
[Read the article: Is Alberto Gonzales the new Scooter Libby?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Scott McClellen maybe, but not this guy. He's understood and actively participated in every move this administration's made against the constitution and our civil liberties. But fall guy or not, he's got to go.

the "mainstream" conservatives
[Read the article: The Coulterization of the American right]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]As despicable as they are, its folks like David Brooks that I find the most disappointing. As part of the noise machine, Hannity and friends are expected to tow the line no matter what. As for Brooks, he is supposed to be the thinking man's conservative, and yet every week on "Newshour"- there he is limply disregarding the latest scandal. As an administrative apologist, he's right up there with the rest of them, he just does it sporting a bow tie. Real conservatives should be screaming for W's skin louder than liberals, and the fact that stand-up conservatives like Bob Barr, and Bob Dole can't/won't speak up only further discredits the whole movement.

armchair quarterback
[Read the article: Another conservative has a change of heart]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]One the one hand its nice to hear card-carrying conservatives like Barr and Dick Armey criticizing an administration that has never really carried water for true conservative principles. On the other hand, I can't help wondering if these guys would say anything if they were still in elected positions. They wouldn't-because holding on to power is the only real principle they hold dear. Just look at McCain.

its about the balance
[Read the article: Three questions for Tayannah Lee McQuillar]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Working in a record store during the mid-80's, the writing was already on the wall that thug-flavored hip hop was going to push out everything else. As for gansta rap, in many respects it reached its peak by the early nineties; what we've got now is pimp hop. Sure, there's plenty of great hip hop out there, but as Mcquillar argues its way out of balance. Reminds me of how hair metal ruled rock for about half a decade, and then grunge came along and washed it all away. Hopefully there is a hip hop Nirvana waiting in the wings, but i'm not holding my breath.
I guess what I miss about old school rap was that it had a sense of humor and playfulness. If eminem is funny, then I'm not getting the joke. But I guess that's just me getting old.

global warming? Camille, stick to Madonna
[Read the article: Real inconvenient truths]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The recent report on global warming is the consenus of thousands of scientists who contributed to- and debated the data. Scientists- you know, those people who go through years of training to look at the natural world from a skeptical point of view and form conclusions based on the data at hand. Most scientists can get into an disagreement about almost anything, but human-facilitated global warming is not not one of those things. If you can't trust that kind of censensus, then don't bother taking those heart, diabetes or cancer meds, cause you damn well can't trust those. Welcome back to the flat earth society.
