Here is what McCain does when setting up the town halls...
Let Fox News, the network that called Obama a jihadist for giving a fist pump and insulted his wife, run the town hall. And then McCain - who it turns out lacks the courage to debate in a neutral platform - will cry like a baby when Obama refuses. So the classic GOP play-the-oppressed-victim narrative will play out.
This is EXACTLY what Reagan did to HW Bush in 2000 in New Hampshire, and Obama is wise to stay away from such scumbag tactics. Why give McCain free advertising for his empty-suit platform?

McCain thought Obama would dismiss the idea out of hand when it was first proposed, and must've been concerned when Obama reacted favorably toward the idea. So, the key became how to MAKE Obama withdraw.
But how?
Step 1 - get Fox News to run it
But what if Obama STILL attended even after McCain changed the forum and underlying concept of the town hall? Maybe some insurance would be needed?
Like, maybe, having the host - Fox News - insult his wife and call him a jihadist in the days leading up to the event? That makes it all but certain that Obama would not attend.
Mission accomplished!
I am not a conspiracy fan, but I find this plausible. And for any of you that thought this "Town Hall" was EVER supposed to be an honest offer or a real discussion, you are deluding yourselves. Consider the source - John "Do as I say, not as I do" McCain and the GOP and Fox News. C'mon now. They have quite the track record.

You want to see Obama's support go up against suburban women? In moderately conservative areas like the Philly suburbs? Then make this a HUGE issue as soon as he signs the bill.
McCain's support would drop in every state where Huckabee didn't fare well - in sum, the ones that matter.
I love that a state with so many problems and its largest city (and only one of note) in ruins has time for this foolishness.

Let's just say this - when it comes to privatizing social security, McCain was "for it, before he was against it, before he was for it, before he was against it".
Whereas with Iraq he was "for it, before he was against it, before he was for it".
If a Democrat campaigned in such an incosistent manner he'd be fininshed by now. Why can the Dems not bury this clown? He is unable to keep track of his constantly-shifting opinions, and he is campaigning as a straight-talker!?!??! He is running an ad against war while vowing to continue it forever if necessary!?!?!

He then gets Fox News, who reently insulted Obama's wife and called him a jihadist, to run it.
He then stacks it with his own supporters.
McCain was for the idea of non-media town hall discussions (last month), before he was against them (last night), before he was for them (today).
What a lying fraud he is, and he is so confused he can't even keep the lies straight.
WHEN WILL THE MEDIA ANALYZE WHAT MCCAIN OFFERED AND WHAT HE IS NOW DELIVERING WITH THES TOWN HALLS?!? HE WROTE IT!!! AND THE MSM BLEW HIM FOR DAYS FOR MAKING THE OFFER, SO I KNOW THEY SAW IT!
All this is is a ploy - like when Reagan trapped HW Bush in NH at one of these 'debates' in 2000. HW bought in and accepted the invitation, only to have Reagan change all the rules and formats at the last second. He put Bush in the position of looking like a chump, a liar, or a coward. Sadly, a REAL AND GENUINE war hero (HW Bush) was made to look like a craven fool by the "Great Communicator".
