He was once a democrat. He ran for mayor of New York City as a republican and won. Why he switched, I don't know.
From what I know, he has been good for the city. What can people tell me.
He is obviously a good business man, he made good money. Does anyone know his business reputation? Is he good to labor, is he good to the environment? Is he a good guy to work with?
I read the op-ed piece and liked some of what he has to say. He was a little hard on crime and a little weak on battling climate change, but good on building urban areas - urban development could spur economic growth in America (and potentially be pro-environment).
He has a very pro-business slant, but business is the current power holder in the American economy and abroad. If you want good things to happen in America, they happen through business.
It would be a good balance because Obama is not beholden to business and can therefore represent the people's interests. He has not taken any special interests, corporate or lobbyist dollars in his campaign. He is beholden to the 1,000,000 people who have donated to his campaign. Power-to-the-people Obama leading a business insider Bloomberg who can help use business to make all Americans more prosperous.
Look around, the economy is not doing great right now. A lot of big businesses are still making money but are beginning to suffer because American workers are suffering. American workers are suffering not because of trade, but because of bad trade deals. Obama, working with Bloomberg, could negotiate good trade deals that benefit workers and companies.
Obama represents what should be the number one priority of the American government - the people's interests. Partnering with Bloomberg will give Obama significant leverage when working with business. Lets have businesses working for the best interest of American people.
The economy is one of, it not the most important issue to Americans right now, as it will likely be in the November election. An Obama-Bloomberg, people-business candidacy would clean house in the presidential election because you have the best of both worlds!
So, assuming he is a sound, pro-labor, pro-environment businessman, imagine what it would be like if Bloomberg was VP with a liberal president like Obama guiding his economic policy. I bet good things would happen for the workers and the economy.
And let's not fool ourselves, we are all workers and workers are the economy. When the two are equal partners, what helps one, helps the other.
Anyway, the more I think about it, I like it. Obama/Bloomberg 2008. Barack and Michael 08. I doubt it will ever happen, but its fun to think about. What do you think?
I believe Obama's policies are just as strong as Hillary's - they both have strong policies and both would make great Presidents (note - I will happily support HRC if she is the nominee; sure I will be saddened and disappointed if Obama doesn't win, but it won't send my into a depression!).
I believe the policy differences are so minute that it comes down to more than just policy for my decision (although, Obama has the policies too - just as strong as Hillary's - that is a pre-req for me and he fulfilled it).
Here are my reasons:
Electability - Obama has much more appeal to moderates and independents than does Hillary. He has demonstrated this appeal by consistently winning states in which independents and Republicans can vote in the Democratic Primary. An Obama candidacy puts traditional "red" states into play for Democrats (which also extends "down the ticket"). I am afraid that Hillary will unite what is a fractured Republican party against her candidacy. While I don't blame her, and I will fight against it if she is elected, there is anti-Hillary bias, especially amongst the right.
Coalition building - As described above, Obama can reach across party lines to get things done. I believe his pragmatic style, his depth of understanding in policy issues and his vision for better possibilities will allow him to work with Republicans and Democrats in guiding our country towards a more positive future. And, if he wins a 60 - 40 general election (versus a 51-49 split Hillary would likely win by), he will have a real "mandate" for pushing his agenda.
Inspiration - I love his inspiration! Every time I listen to his speeches, I find myself nodding my head and saying, "yes, right on." And not because he uses pretty words and has a nice voice - I am inspired BY HIS IDEAS! He has great ideas! He has a positive vision for our country! And, he can communicate that vision and get people excited about that vision. Our country is down and depressed. George Bush put us in a serious case of the blues. I want a President I am excited to see on TV. I want a President who excites young people and who makes people want to be involved in the country. Yes, he is inspiring and god love him for it!
Authenticity - They (being marketers) say younger generations are more focused on a person's authenticity - that the person is who they say they are, that the person isn't trying to be one thing, or saying they will be something, when they are really not that thing. They say younger generations are sick of constant marketing and fake appeals, they are tired of empty promises by companies, by parents, by teachers who say one thing but take a different action. This is why younger generations flock to Obama - they have a built in "authenticity radar" and can spot fake from a mile away. And, because they have such a nose for authenticity, they believe Obama when he says it's not about him, it's about the American people. And I believe him too.
