buck on football
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]wasn't joe buck the one who had a hissy fit when randy moss did that fake mooning thing last year at green bay? that red-faced tirade was pretty annoying. take your cue from troy aikman and just call the game, man.

lauren's triumph is my defeat
[Read the article: Laguna biatch]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]i watch "laguna beach," and other reality programming, with curious obsession in order to confirm that there are people vain and shallow enough to offer themselves on television as sacrificial lambs in the dim hope of achieving celebrity. they allow themselves to be caricatured, and so, when bad things happen to them, i howl with mean-spirited laughter at these caricatures. real people, my ass; once you're on mtv, you become a character and i have power over you. (pretty fucked up, huh?)
which is why i find lauren so frustrating. i mean, you're absolutely right, she seems to be the strongest person on the show, entirely in control of her identity. i can roll my eyes when i hear that godawful accent, but it just doesn't take the place of a backbreaking guffaw brought by the the tearful, alcohol-induced breakups that i've come to hate and love simulatenously. really shows confirm my disappointment in humanity--curse you, lauren, for denying me satisfaction!

an educated risk
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]i too liked vermiel's decision to run and win rather than kick and tie. but i don't think it was that much of a risk, given that the chiefs have the best 1-2 running back punch in football, and larry j was coming off that great run. there's something to be said for acknowledging raw talent and momentum over statistics. win or lose, though, one thing's for certain--dick vermeil's gonna be cryin' his eyes out!

burns and pulp fiction
[Read the article: Sex freaks]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]i'm liking this book right now. i heard an interview with charles burns a couple of weeks ago on open source, and i was suprised to hear the interviewer invoke albrecht durer but not pulp novel covers or EC horror comics when talking about burns's art. pulp artists still get no love.

re: alexander's post
[Read the article: Throwing Google at the book]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]i agree with alexander. you can debate antiquated copyright laws till the cows come home, but to lionize google as some kind of robin hood is just naive. like all smart companies, their ultimate mission is far from noble.

right-eous brothers
[Read the article: Around the Web: The Right rocks out while the Arctic Monkeys sing for the camera. Plus: The Corey Feldman album cover you'll wish you never saw]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]wow! what a trio of catchy songs! the right bros are like pied pipers...i am feeling...sleepy...can't resist...the power...of the pop music...moving...slowly...to the right...mama, i wanna live!

it's only available through the website
[Read the article: Finding "Little Nemo"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]yeah, i think the only place it's available is on the website. i read an article a couple of months ago in the new york times, and it's completely self-financed. the guy had to mortgage his house to get it done!
there is also a calendar available for those of us who are nemo fans and poor. i have it, and, while it's no substitute for the OG, it's pretty cool.

great show--terrible time slot
[Read the article: I Like to Watch]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]heather, i was the same way you were with "battlestar galactica," but then i was completely disarmed. in a genre often marred with cliches, it's a triumph that this show is utterly devoid of them.
but what an awful time slot! watching it with my girlfriend last night (yes, a handful of us who watch "battlestar galactica" have healthy social lives), she cracked that "nerds all over the country are pumping their fists right about now." i mean, scifi must be aiming squarely at the nerd demographic to put the show on at such an inconvenient time of the week. in spite of that, the show soldiers on, undaunted, like its war-torn namesake.

firefly vs. bg
[Read the article: I Like to Watch]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]both excellent shows, but ron moore is definitely more of a pragmatist than our beloved joss. i realized this fundamental difference--and "battlestar's" greatness--early on, in the miniseries, when roslin is faced with the dilemma of leaving behind for slaughter the civilian ships that don't have the technology to jump to a different galaxy. we all know that joss would've figured out an improbable way to save all the passengers before the imminent cylon attack. but, ever the pragmatist, moore has his leader make a tough decision: to cut the fleet's losses and strand the stragglers. it's a controversial, yet utterly plausible, decision given the circumstances. this is where "battlestar galactica" stands head and shoulders above the competition: its moral journey goes where no one has gone before.

in defense of jake
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]i think plummer did a great job of eluding the pittsburgh defensive line when his offensive line broke down so easily. when the line held, he would stand around forever, looking in vain for an open receiver. i credit the steeler's d for making plummer look that bad.

dispatch from durham
[Read the article: I Like to Watch]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]heather, i agree with your comments about vis-a-vis racism in durham in particular and the south in general. i live in durham now, and ironically i find this area more honest about black-white relations that more traditionally liberal enclaves.
the jazz musician branford marsalis was talking about this the other day on a local radio show. marsalis, who is black, moved to durham a few years ago from new rochelle, ny, because he felt that his son was not experiencing a range of social conditions. marsalis gamely defined the issue in terms of class, not race. (this is important distinction in a place like durham, which has many well-to-do blacks, including a black mayor, and many poor and working class whites and latinos.) at least in durham, and areas similar to it in the south, you can't help but encounter the entire social stratosphere, from obscene wealth to abject poverty to--and this is the most important--everything in between, within a few blocks of each other. it's by no means a utopia, but at least prejudice isn't that elephant in the room that it may be in more segregated cities.

[Read more letters about this article: Here]yo, allow me to be da first to hollaback at da pussy who be callin hisself "anonymous": dis cracka ass be wastin' you wit his gat if you be hatin'! natalie portman be pimp on da mic!
