  • Coloring the lens of the history that will judge them.

Isn't this, as much as anything, an attempt to re-write history in real time? We all recall that W has infamously said that his actions will only be judged by history, long after any of us are around. History will be much harsher than contemporary writers in judging an invasion of Iraq in response to an attack by al Qaeda. So this may be an attempt to re-shape the "facts" as much for present-day consumption as for the future writers of the history books. If it becomes accepted "fact" that the Iraqi insurgents are al Qaeda, history will be far kinder to W and his administration's decision to invade and occupy Iraq.

what's particularly interesting is that the pundits had their perception of public opinion upside down with the Clinton investigations, too - the majority of the public, in that case, did NOT support the investigations, or think they were worth the time or money spent on them. yet the pundits and politicians continued to flog those issues to death, acting as if they public cared.

so when the public cares, pundits ignore that, say they don't, and do what they want.

but when the public does NOT care... pundits ignore THAT, say they do, and you guessed it, do what they want.
