[Read the article: Obama "outraged" by Wright]

I've been watching CNN (I know, I know...I really shouldn't be, but I'm weak sometimes :) and they're framing today's events in a very interesting manner. They're playing it in almost Soap Opera terms, it was a personal and painful split for Obama. That his hand was forced by someone whom he respected and it obviously causes him pain, but make no mistake about it, he's split with him.

In a way I think this kind of framing is a stroke of luck for Obama, it frames this issue in a very favourable light for him.

Also, I think the repetitious "he was there for twenty years!" charge will get more and more muted. It really only had any (MINOR) validity when Obama refused to break with Wright. Now that he has so unequivocally it almost is rendered moot (not for the screaming banshees though...but let's be honest, nothing would be good enough for them). There just isn't any oomph to saying "Obama's ex-pastor just said something crazy again, why did it take so long for Obama to break ties with him?". When he can counter "He doesn't speak for me, we've gone over this - now let's talk about what we're going to do about housing, or gas, or inflation, or the dollar etc etc etc"

So yeah, politically Obama did the Wright (heh) thing today...in the greater scheme of things I wholeheartedly agree with my man "weeping". A mind far greater than mine and a pen far more eloquent then my humble scratchings.

I have no idea what you're talking about...neither do you apparently...I have no idea where you get the idea that the MSM hates Clinton, they don't. They also don't hate Obama.

What they hate is low ratings.

This debacle..erm...i mean primary has been many things, but a ratings black hole it hasn't.

  • holiday??

[Read the article: The gas tax battle continues]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Isn't the answer not a tax holiday, but MORE taxes?? 18 cents per gallon seems obscenely low to me (and I'm guessing the oil companies just love that it's a flat fee and not a percentage).

I'm being a little short sighted I know...at this point there's precious little you can do - raising taxes would just mean they companies will raise the prices accordingly. They've ascertained that the public WILL pay $4/gallon. Had they raised taxes at the pump earlier, then the oil companies would've been forced to keep the oil prices within a range that people would find agreeable.

btw - I saw today in the elevator news that Royal Dutch Shell made $9 billion (that's BILLION) last quarter.

    know what I'm LOVING?

How today I get to witness the death throes of "20 YEARS! 20 YEARS!!! IT'S ABOUT JUDGEMENT! JUDGEMENT!!!!!"

The usual suspects here are getting the last little bit of play they can out of this silliness, and frankly it's damn fun to watch.

So let them have one more day of this, they know it's over for them.

Cause by tomorrow it'll look like this:

"Wright said the gov't caused AIDS!"

"Yeah, well, Wright isn't Obama, and Obama denounced Wright"

    "....."

    "....."

    "but...but...Wright said God damn America!"

"Yeah, but Obama didn't, and Obama repudiated Wright"

    "but...but...empty suit!"

    "very incisive"

  • one last thought on this issue...

[Read the article: Obama: "I am outraged"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Ya know, who's to say that Obama and Wright haven't openly disagreed with each other about these issues for many years? For all we know the two of them have had many a debate over coffee hashing out their respective world views?

I mean, I have a good friend, a buddy I've known for, lemme count...15 years now who believes some truly stupid shit. I mean really dumb tin foil hat, xenophobic bullshit. I can't begin to tell you the number of times we've gone round and round the mulberry bush on how we view the world and politics and theology and philosophy. I mean, by now it's become par for the course...after a few beers and the requisite catching up, we get into our well worn corners and debate, but always in a friendly manner.

He thinks I'm a naive idiot and I think he's a delusional moron.

but dude, we're still friends. We both realized long ago that you don't need to agree on everything your buddy thinks in order to be friends. (this especially helps if you have differing "types" of women you find attractive :)

what I'm getting at in a rrreaaallly roundabout way is; for all those who someone think Obama believes the stuff that Wright said, and use his staying in the church for all those years as proof - look at your friend group, any kooks in there? Probably is I reckon. How's that old saying go? "Lest ye that is without sin?"

    cheers

  • ack!

That final rhetorical flourish should obviously read "let he who is without sin"

Damn. Almost made it pops, I almost made it!

I agree with everything you said. That photo IS creepy, much in the same way that Joe Simpson talking about his daughter's chest is creepy. It's. just. creepy.

but I do have to admit, the headline to that Hulk Hogan link damn near made me spew coffee all over my computer.

for those who didn't click here it is in all it's hilarious glory:

"Hulk Hogan to Billy Ray Cyrus: This is how you take inappropriate photos with your daughter, brotha!"

  • True Border story

[Read the article: So long, Canada]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Back in the early 70s my friend's dad was crossing the border from Canada into the United States on a business trip. He had just moved to Toronto from Northern Ontario to work for some fancypants research lab or something. When the border guard asked him where he was from he replied "Toronto" with the emphasis on the second T, and not "Tronna" which is of course the preferred pronunciation of the locals.

The border guard pulled him over and searched him high and low...all because someone from Tronna would never say ToronTo.

I always found that story amusing...

    cheers
