[Read the article: Barack Obama in suspended animation]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I was being sarcastic! Guess I should be more judicious with the winky emoticon. ;)
That being said, I think my point still stands...that people are fully able to make these associations with the Clintons (rightly or wrongly) without any prodding by Obama. I also don't think that Clinton was denigrating MLK...but as I (and Uncle Fester I believe) have stated before - you just don't mess with American Myth (in the finest Joseph Campbell understanding of that word)...I think it's wholly believable that a large swath of people heard that comment from Clinton and made up their own minds about what it meant. I think politician can try to frame events for the public, but in the end it's the public that decides what is salient (and the piss poor quality of what they find is salient is a rant for another day ;)...
but if we're going to go with your line of reasoning then you must see that there's a smidge of difference between what Jackson Jr. says on behalf of Obama's campaign (is he even on the staff? and if so is he anything more than a regional guy?) and what Bill Clinton says on behalf of Clinton's right?
again, I do not think the Clintons are racist folks - but there have been a few instances where it really seems that they were using the general populace's unease with race as a campaign tactic. But in the words of Royal Tennenbaum "Hey, it's just one man's opinion!"
;)

[Read the article: How 1968 changed Hillary]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Just curious: why did you post a link to a feminist blog and not the Washington Post article that the blog is talking about? I always thought the whole "Clinton lied about a girl dying at a hospital" thing was a giant tempest in a teapot, but here's the thing - if you want prove your point you shouldn't use small blogs to do it. I mean if I wanted to talk about the pervasiveness of wage disparity I would link to an article from The Socialist Worker ;)
The story the Washington Post tells is that the story is a bit more complex than Clinton stated (but that shouldn't surprise anyone...the point is the same, but one can't really explain all the details in a speech - I get that, and don't denigrate her for it)...I fear that you didn't post to the full article because it's not a 100% "vindication" for Clinton...
anyways...good to see that American Health Care system working at its best.
(alright, that was a little snarky ;)

ack!
[Read the article: How 1968 changed Hillary]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]*wouldn't link to an article from The Socialist Worker
bloody proofreading!
(actually I miss my undergrad days, being able to buy that hilarious rag...it was like it was written by drunken chimps :)

@Had it
[Read the article: My last word (for now) on sexism]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]fyi, I'm TOTALLY stealing your "Once more, with feeling"
dude, that made literally "snerk" at work.
Good job!
p.s. to "Phio" - I was wondering when someone would trot out the phrase "public sphere"...it made me lonely for my women's history classes :)

silly syllogism
[Read the article: My last word (for now) on sexism]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]It seems to me there's a pretty silly syllogism lurking under the surface of this "debate"
1) Sexism has hurt Clinton's campaign.
2) I don't support Clinton.
3) Therefore I am a sexist.
(i know it's not perfect, but then I failed out of freshman philosophy ;)
p.s. Add me to the chorus that thinks the inclusion of Olbermann with those cretins is off.

[Read more letters about this article: Here]pfft...spoken like a true Medievalist. Everybody knows the Early Modern Era is where the fun is at!
:)
(actually, I knew there was a reason I liked you...nice to see some historians here, I am but a lowly history major alas. Hey, could you recommend a good survey of the Religious history of the late medieval period? The Reformation is a bit of a passion of mine, and I'd like to have a better understanding of the pre-1400 era..even if Bossy says that nothing happened :)

'splain please
[Read the article: Examining the reaction to Clinton's hospital story]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]can somebody explain this to me nice and slowly? I honestly can't make heads or tails of this story.
lady is pregnant, tries to go to a clinic, she is rejected from said clinic b/c she owes them money and cannot afford the $100 deposit. So she goes to a hospital and dies from complications?
is this it in a nutshell?
Did the hospital work on her? Try to save hers and the baby's life?
Clinton's version is what? Pregnant lady was rejected from a hospital for not having the $100 deposit, and she died.
I gotta say...Alex is right, there's nothing essential that Clinton got wrong - I think the obvious point she was trying to make was that healthcare is effed up. No arguments here.
p.s. to MICKI - will you concede that Obama is doing a little bit of hedging with regards to his healthcare plan? It's one thing to be guns a-blazing about this in the primary...but come General Election time all voters are going to hear (if Clinton wins) is "Clinton will take your money. Your hard-earned money". Nobody doubts that Obama will try to fix the healthcare mess if elected - but he has to get elected first.
cheers
