  • Dodgers?

I gotta say, I'm a little surprised you didn't pick the Dodgers to win the west. They being a team that I vaguely follow (I blame Delillo) which also has the added bonus of employing an outfielder (André Ethier) who shares his name with my favourite Canadian Bob Dylan wannabe, they seemed kind of...close (but then again maybe they weren't?). I dunno, I figured that the hiring of Torre might be one of those "calming influence" type of things that could translate into a few more wins.

Actually, what is your take on the effect of the baseball manager? Is it a glorified role, or do you think they can significantly improve a team? I concede that they can actively hurt a team (a boneheaded use of the bullpen or overworking pitchers for example), but I haven't really thought too much about the positive role they can play in winning a significant number of more games.

p.s. after looking at the NL this year, man I wish my Blue Jays weren't in the AL East...I think they stack up pretty well against ANY NL team. Sigh...3rd place it is again...

Why you gotta go and ruin a perfectly good gripe with facts and stats and junk?

Jeez...who invited *this* guy to the party?

I still think my Blue Jays (who are apparently bringing back the 80s powder blues for friday home games, so at least we got that going for us) will finish third...I've been hearing that TB is coming on for so many years now that I'll only believe it when i see it (and yes, I realize that by saying this I'm basically defrosting some delicious crow :)

    cheers

Ignore "hunthorse"...one quick look through his letter history and you'll see that he and Ed Anger are the only two Americans left who are afraid of The Socialists.

While I haven't read any of these pieces, I wouldn't be surprised to find it as poorly researched as his dreadful "Koba the Dread" where he picks an unnecessary fight (Stalin was bad!) then relies waaaay too heavily on the crusty old Cold War Historians like Richard Pipes and, to a lesser extent, Robert Conquest to prove his point that Lenin was like totally evil too. Then he picked a truly bizarre fight with Hitchens assuming that Hitchens was still the radical Trotskyist he was in the 70s when they worked together...it was kind of surreal to read actually.

Granted he can craft a beauty of a line, but if it's cogent analysis you're looking for, then look elsewhere.

"He won't help him one bit but nothing will help him except all the malcontents, jealous class warriors in this country plus the idiotic liberal elitists who think that they'll have B. Hussein Obama snd his charming wife on their plantation. "

Is this ALL you got?! C'mon! Why don't you REALLY let some invective fly?!

    What about us socialists? Nuthin'?

    you disappoint me hunthorse..

It wasn't only the left that was decrying the situation in Afghanistan under the Taliban in the 90s, hell I remember that august publication Glamour running article after article highlighting the deplorable treatment of women in that country.

(why I was reading my girlfriend's issues of Glamour? Well that's a story for another day ;)

Why does everything always happen at 3 am?

    Canada.

Why is it that Canada, a thriving multicultural country, where 50% of the people in its biggest city (Toronto) are visible minorities, and where mixed race marriage rates are soaring has NONE of the "ills" that you think Islam has wrought on your European country??

It couldn't be that perhaps European countries treat immigrants like second class citizens - denying them citizenship and all the perks that go along with it? Nah...it can't be that you have created a permanent underclass of visible minorities, and that these minorities might feel ostracized. Hell, I'm pretty sure you're the type of guy that can't for the life of him understand how building a big old wall around Palestinian lands would actually exacerbate the problem...

no, you go on right ahead thinking that it's the evil that is Islam that will destroy Europe (remind me again, was Hitler Sunni or Shia? Didn't he almost destroy Europe?)

I'll take that one example as indicative of all muslim canadian fathers if you'll concede that all american mothers drown their babies in their cars.
