about that John Muir
[Read the article: Anywhere that's wild]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I read your article with relish, and enjoyed the references to John Muir, a man whose writings I've deeply admired...but for a fuller account of the man I urge you to read Donald Worster's essay "John Muir and the Modern Passion for Nature" (Environmental Review, 10,1 Jan 2005)..I'm pretty sure it's on JSTOR. In it you see that his writings about Yosemite were those of a young man full of idealism...his later years were sadly typified by his love of the finer things in life and conciliation with big business concerns.
(or as dear mr. vonnegut might say "so it goes")

oh relax...

[Read more letters about this article: Here]c'mon now, what's the point of such vitriol directed towards our favourite sports writer? So he doesn't like hockey, big whoop..I LOVE the damn sport, I bleed bleu, blanc, et rouge...but sheesh, if you really want hockey coverage you're gonna have to go to canadian newspaper sites...globeandmail.com is surprisingly good.
oh, and "buffalonian": they're called beaver "tails" not "tales"...and there's damn near nothing finer in the world to soak up a night's worth of beer :)

re: Ottawa
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Aw...it ain't as bad as all that! Ottawa is kinda like your girlfriend's little sister, the one you always thought of like your own little sister, kinda dorky and awkward. Only one day you find out she no longer listens to Britney Spears, now she likes The Clash...and you start to realize that she's kinda cool, only not in that way, 'cause she's still your girlfriend's little sister and that's totally gross.
(or something like that...man...I gotta stop procrastinating!)
cheers,
p.s. I really was hoping buffalo would pull it out this year (i live in toronto)...tough break though, don't know if the team can do it again next year after Briere returns home as the triumphant prodigal son. It's ashame, you guys play hockey the way it was meant to be played...sigh.

sigh...about that "icing"
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Okay Art Guerilla,
Here's the thing about icing. The rink is divided into three "zones" - each team's defensive zone demarcated by a blue line, and a neutral zone (the area between the two blue lines which has a red line in the middle - this is centre ice).
Icing happens when a player shoots the puck all the to opposite end of the ice before crossing the red line (and into the opposing team's section of the neutral zone).
Once a puck is iced the play stops and there is a face-off in the offending team's zone, and the offending team must take that face-off with the players that were on the ice at the time of the infraction.
why do they do this?
because otherwise, a team with the lead would spend the rest of the game simply firing the puck the length of the ice whenever the gained possession. Think of it like basketball's 24 second shot clock, it compels the team with the lead to continue playing instead of playing "keep away". Plus there's the added penalty of forcing potentially tired players on the ice for the face-off. Therefore, Icing actually increases the likelihood of more scoring!

hmmm
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Hey King,
doesn't this article run pretty much opposite of your assertion that there's no "clutch" in baseball? :)
I think I get it though...it's exceedingly hard to figure out what exactly makes a superstar...some of those cliches spouted by the commentariat are valid, others are not, it's damn hard to figure out which is which though
I guess...

oops

[Read more letters about this article: Here]Sorry King,
A quick scan of your archive reminded me that it was your predecessor and not you that didn't believe in clutch hitting...je m'excuse.
cheers,

One way to kill a lunch hour...
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Great article King,
In hindsight it sure looks like every year a large number of teams totally flub their draft picks...outside the few Cheney-esque "slam dunk" first picks every few years (Lebron comes to mind, so does Duncan and Iverson) it really looks like a crap shoot. I wonder how often teams with the first pick in a non-slam dunk year go with the safe pick instead of the "project" in order to avoid looking stupid a few years down the road?
But it got me thinking, how often does a team actually draft anyone of value from the second round? So I just wasted about half an hour looking it up and came up with my top three since 2000:
2001 - Gilbert Arenas
2002 - Carlos Boozer
2000 - Michael Redd
other than that...man, there's alot of offal there...you'd think with the sheer number of college teams and international leagues that the number of quality 2nd round picks would be higher. What's going on here? Is it that most teams take fliers on projects in the 2nd round? Any thoughts?

sheesh!
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]alright, let's take this nice and slow...sometimes there are bad people. Sometimes those people are white, and sometimes they are black, or brown, or whatever. The basis of one dude's badness has nothing to do with his colour. Jones is a bad man, note that he is not a bad black man, but just a bad man period.
clear enough?
Call me an idealist or whatever, but I think that there should still be some level of decency obvious in people that are paid millions to play a sport/serve as some sort of role-model to the younger generation.
and your shift into anti-semitism is just plain insane dear "thrasher"
p.s. I kinda see where you're coming from RealName...but mayhaps you're hitching your horse to the wrong wagon in Jones.
