[Read the article: The quest for universal healthcare]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Thank you for your civil response, but I'm going to have to respectfully disagree.
Healthcare. That is, the desire to keep your citizens healthy, is not, or rather it should not, be a business. Ever. There's your fatal flaw right from the get-go. It's the moral responsibility of the government to ensure the health and safety of its people. I know that you'll disagree with that statement, but I'm sure there's Americans that would also agree.
Your assertion that high costs lead to development seems off to me. Others here have stated why, I don't need to repeat them. You shouldn't seek to make excuses for insurance companies making obscene profits...they aren't doing so out of any sense of altruism. I understand that you're a free market capitalist, and that's fine (up to a point)...but healthcare simply should not be part of the free market economy.
I'm sure we'll never agree on that point, but thank you again for being civil. It's refreshing to find here at salon!
cheers

"As history has shown, and continues to everyday, most countries in the world are chickenshit, and need the US to stand up for them, since no one else will."
[Read the article: The quest for universal healthcare]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]well I take back what I said about being civil! No cookie for you young man!
Not to get into a military pissing contest with you here..,but there are numerous reasons, aside from having you guys to the south, why Canada doesn't need a bigger army. You mentioned Russia attacking us. Really? Umm...precisely why would they do that? For our natural resources? You mean the same ones they already have? Or for lebensraum? Russia certainly is pretty crowded I hear :)
nope, if we have anybody to actually fear invading us...it's you.
but all this is a divergence from the topic at hand (which I assume was kufir's intention)
sorry

@maureenodonnell!!
[Read the article: Hillary Clinton's Texas-size moment ]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]You dirty plagiarist!
you just wrote:
"There seems to be too much Elmer Gantry about all of this to be healthy for any country."
and just TWO days ago I wrote:
"It must be so painful for you to watch all these young and idealistic people rallying behind a politician...after all only you can really see that he's an Elmer Gantry, life must be tough. Wednesday, February 20, 2008 12:17 PM"
and nowhere did I see you crediting me! I'm the originator of the "Elmer Gantry" reference! You should have your posting privileges revoked! Of course if you can provide me with the footnotes to your previous post wherein you rightfully credit me with creating "Elmer Gantry" as an Obama barb, you'll be forgiven and hopefully chastened.
(i'm teasing of course...just wanted to lighten things up here in the boiler-room :)

@AKA Smith
[Read the article: Hillary Clinton's Texas-size moment ]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]With all due respect, I don't think the Obama camp is trying to ressurect the plagiarism issue - it appears as if they're trying to end the conversation once and for all. Like in a "see? you can make the argument that Hillary just plagiarized...it's stupid, but you could. Let's move on now"
I kind of get that this plagiarism thing is a big deal for you, but I don't think it has much widespread traction. Much like how my distaste for Clinton really solidified over her treatment of Kerry with his "get (us) sent to Iraq" joke and how she demanded he apologize to the troops blah blah blah. Remember how she fell right in line with the Right Wing noise machine (who were trying to make it a wedge issue before the mid-terms) in order to not look weak on the military (or something...who knows). For me it showed a total disregard for Party Loyalty (and yes, I realize that America has a very different conception of Party than we do here in Canada...but it still seemed awfully self-serving)
I've mentioned this event a couple of times on these message boards, and nobody seems to have picked up on it (ie nobody has repeated it)...which I guess means it also has no traction (actually it means it has even less traction than the plagiarism story...but I digress). I guess my point is, we all have moments that crystallize our stances...it appears as if this one is yours, but you probably shouldn't think you can convince others of this.
cheers

yep
[Read the article: Newsday's cheap shot]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]That's certainly a dirty hit-job of an article from a po-dunk little paper...it shouldn't (but probably will) have legs, and that's a shame.
Speaking of shame, what's up Alex? No comment on Hillary's...interesting weekend? From the "shame on you!" to the open mockery of Obama in Providence...it's certainly been eventful no? No mention of those incidents? Curious.

Nader!!
[Read the article: Dems condemn Nader]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Well I think it's awesome news, even if I'm fairly certain he'll be a non-entity this time around. In 2000 he had all his possible stars aligned but couldn't break the magic 5% barrier.
I find it quite odd how many people here think the way to nullify a third party option is to disallow them to run (or get angry at the fact that they have to temerity to run!). Everybody knows the way to negate their sway is to co-opt their platform...you say the same things they are, but with the brand loyalty and hey presto - no Floridas!
I think there should be more third (and fourth and fifth and sixth) party candidates...it keeps the ruling parties honest.
