nuclear option

Apparently the Repblicans also think the public's forgotten how they're the party of Karl Rove and the "with us or against us" president they served. The Dems need to pull out the nuclear option and simply ignore the Republicans. If Susan Collins et al want to have a say, they can switch parties. Given the stupidity of the party's leadership giving in completely to the Limbaugh/Palin wing, it's going to be at least a couple of election cycles since they'll be able to do anything about that.

Original article: Obama's Reagan problem

If progressives could get past calling Republican presidents stupid for a minute...

...they'd realize that he was, in fact, the most effective president in terms of accomplishing what he set out to do since FDR, whereas Clinton was easily the least effective since Jimmy Carter. Yes, almost all of what he set out to do was wrong, beginning with removing the solar panels from the White House roof, but, if Democrats want to actually get anything done in terms of dismantling his legacy, they need to learn from Reagan, just like Reagan learned from FDR.

Not the only one....

Gotta say, Glenn, Rove's not the only one being consciously dishonest here. You know damn well what kind of guy he is--and that just about every word he drools down his fat chin is a thoroughly self-serving, meanspirited, and untrue on at least one or two levels--so it's a bit disingenuous to "ask" the question at the beginning of your posting, here.....

Original article: Heads should roll

WHY DOES SALON KEEP PUBLISHING THIS FRAUD?!

Why am I surprised that the bogus intellectual is defending Rush Limbaugh? Or that she's assuming her readers are dumb enough to think that the Rush Limbaugh affair--with supposed leaders of the Republican party feeling the obvious need to deflate him before having to bend over and apologize?

At least one head needs to roll at Salon!

Speaking as a Pennsylvania Democrat: The national GOP doesn't like you, Arlen, and the Pennsylvania GOP likes you even less. Our door's wide open, buddy--c'mon over....

Wait a second...

George W. Bush didn't invent signing statements, and the fact that he used them at all is really not the issue. The issue is that he used them many times more than any previous president. So, tying Obama to Bush because he's used one of them shows an ignorance of presidential history.

what does it tell us?

I'd say it's an answer that only applies to one sub-section of Americans, and it's we don't need to hear if we've been paying any attention at all in the past decade and a half to the existence of Fox News, right wing talk radio, the popularity of Ann Coulter, etc. Those of us who have been paying attention (you included, I think, Alex, thus making this article rather disingenuous) know that there's a sizeable percentage of the population (considerably larger than the numbers you just gave for Beck's viewership) that believes Obama is somehow simultaneously a Muslim, communist, and atheist. Is it really surprising that they're flocking to this apocalyptic garbage?

Salon's Painful Misstep

Let Salon grow into the job of being an intelligent web-site--but it better do it fast!

Hiring a fake intellectual like Camille Paglia to push her contrarian for the sake of being contrarian blather on your pages was painful once, but twice is unforgivable, but you still have time to dump her for good.

Still bitter?

Yes, as with just about everybody who's ever been called a hero, the story was more complicated, the "hero" wasn't quite as special as s/he was made out to be. And yet, people love heroes.

Clearly the real issue here is that Sullenberger got to be named one of these mythic figures, and you didn't. Get over it, buddy.

You've gotta wonder...

...is there anybody in the GOP leadership who's starting to suspect that maybe Rush is more concerned with his own ego--and having an entire major American political party made up completely of his lapdogs--than the good of the party?

Mutts like me

One of the most brilliant things I've heard Obama say was his seemingly off-hand comment about dogs from shelters being "mutts like me" at his first press conference as president--basically saying very simply and good-humoredly that he doesn't see himself as a black or white president and that he's not going to make a big deal about it.

Sestak 2010!

I for one am really looking forward to voting Specter out in the primary next year. He's in for a very rude awakening.

Tuesday, May 5, 2009 08:15 PM

Who says Specter's going to be the Democratic candidate?

Considering the way he's thumbed his nose at the party ever since joining it, including today coming out in favor of Norm Coleman, I see him being supported in the Dem. primary mostly by the moderates who've switched sides in the past year. Joe Sestak in 2010!

Who needs to guess?

The guy's an egomaniacal sociopath. What else would he be doing?

Tuesday, May 12, 2009 11:04 AM

Not a Fan of Edwards

Edwards ran for the Democratic nomination, knowing that he had a huge skeleton in his closet which would certainly be brought to light if he got the nomination (or, as it turns out, even if he didn't). In other words, he was prepared to hand the election to the Republicans. His political career should be put permanently to rest.

Ummmm...

In case you didn't notice, the House and Senate aren't exactly filled with progressives. Do you honestly think single-payer could pass?

Why is David Sarota so in favor of Obama losing the health care battle entirely instead of making a compromise that will at least be somewhat of an improvement?

Monday, May 18, 2009 10:55 PM

Oh, yeah...

Those Republicans can't abide liars, especially concerning important matters like, say, Iraq....

Original article: A White House holiday

With two wars going, political journalist wrote about the president playing golf

With two wars going, the president played golf...I've gotta say that, much as I loathed Bush, I thought this was an incredibly stupid line of criticism, and it's even stupider when we're talking about a president who had nothing to do with starting either of those wars.

Is the president supposed to be a robot, who doesn't relax or get any enjoyment out of life at any time as long as there are serious issues on the national docket?

With two wars going, shouldn't political journalists be criticizing elected officials for more significant offenses than acting like typical Americans and playing golf on Memorial day?
