  • Safe? Content?

    Mayor Larsen:

"People are content," Mayor Larsen told me. "They're busy taking care of everyday needs, making sure that they're making a good living, that their children are safe in their neighborhood. We live in a great community. Safe streets. Great schools. It's hard to say, 'Let's change course.' People feel like things are going well."

    KIFI (area ABC affiliate) website:

"Explosion That Killed Local Family May Have Been Deliberately Set

"A Rexburg home exploded and caught fire three weeks ago, killing the family.

"At first authorities thought the explosion was caused from an accidental natural gas leak in the home, but now they say after bringing in a K9 dog from Salt Lake, they found flammable liquid in the house.

"Sept. 30 early in the morning there were reports of an explosion and house fire. Mark and Amanda Bell and their 3-year-old son Dylan were found in the house dead. By the time emergency services arrived on scene, the house was fully engulfed.

"The fire is now considered non-accidental, and a criminal investigation is underway. What at first seemed like an accident has now turned into a crime scene.

"Madison County Sheriff Roy Klingler said, 'This was not an accident ... the hard part of the case is we don't know when we'll have the proper evidence to feel comfortable in releasing more.'

"The sheriff was unable to release many details, which leaves all of us with a lot of questions.

"If you noticed anything suspicious the morning of Sept. 30 or the night before, or if you know anything at all, the sheriff has asked that you call 356-5426. You can stay anonymous."

  • Just "a standard election"

I think you give these guys more credit than they deserve. Like most of their counterparts, they're nothing but but trained monkeys who dance for whatever organ grinder signs the paycheck. Given the right opportunity and incentive, any one of them, with a few exceptions, would reinvent himself as liberal.

  • Virginia Recount

[Read the article: Allen's last gasps]

If it doesn't go his way, will George Allen call in the Anti-Defamation League?

  • Bush's NSF* problem

[Read the article: Bush's presidential quagmire]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

It's been a mere two years since Bush made the memorable statement about the balance in his political capital account and his intent to spend it; it didn't take long for that account to become grossly overdrawn, leaving the American people with a trail of bounced checks.

    *Bank-talk for "not sufficient funds"

  • Dangerous desperation

[Read the article: A decisive year for "the decider"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

As if George W. Bush hasn't done enough damage to the country, we now have a president who has only one constituent, himself, and a one item agenda, which is to avoid a place in history as our most inept and disasterous president ever. As it stands, that designation should have little trouble sticking, so his only way out is to raise and draw to an inside straight. That would be okay if the chips were his, but they're ours.

  • Judeo-Christian Mythology

[Read the article: Inside the Creation Museum]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

What's the big deal? We read and enjoy Greco-Roman, Asian, Middle Eastern and Norse mythology; we admire and appreciate great and lesser works of literature, art and music based on these themes; we find fascinating and worthy of study Native American as well as African and other indigenous traditions and beliefs. Why should Judeo-Christian mythology be any different?

  • Too smart...

    [Read the article: Bloomberg's ambitions]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Bloomberg is way too smart to waste $2B of his own money on going down in history as a spoiler and catalyst for unintended consequences. However, his disaffiliation does allow him to both speak and use his wealth freely for political purposes, ala George Soros.

  • Chasing the airspeed indicator

[Read the article: Why they fight]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

This is an aviation term most often related to a inexperienced pilot's proclivity to trust the airspeed indicator over the feel of the airplane's controls and its attitude. This fixation on the airspeed indicator's lagging indication of flight performance is a good way to fly into the ground, which is exactly what Senator Brownback is doing because he and others like him can't understand that our society has moved beyond this issue, no matter what his instruments tell him.

  • Damage control

[Read the article: Bush and Cheney walk, too]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I wrote in response to an earlier article that as a lame duck, the administration's only constituent is itself, making it more dangerous than ever to the rest of us. As the Libby situation indicates, Bush and Cheney have turned their backs on the American people in favor of devoting the balance of their lame duck careers to serving only themselves. Tampering with Libby's sentencing merely is a suggestion of the further damage they are likely to inflict on our country and its institutions if they are permitted to remain in office to the end of their terms.

  • Post-Bush exposure

[Read the article: The three stooges]

Assuming that Democrats control both branches starting in 2009, what residual exposure to contempt citations, etc. might Gonzales et al have?

  • My wife jinxed him

[Read the article: Who jinxed Gavin Floyd?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I live in the eastern time zone (Connecticut). During the 8th inning my wife rang me on the intercom to reprimand me for staying up to watch the game. I told her that she had just jinxed a no-hitter. The rest is history.
