Just print a disclaimer for the next generation of volunteers

That says - "The US government offers no warranties or promised either implied or expressed that the people who volunteer to fight in the Armed Forces will be taken care of. Volunteers should carefully consider the risks."

You'd be shocked

But I'm a Dennis supporter. I think the first step in revitalizing American politics is to convince and allow folks to vote for whom they like and want not some insane strategic electoral machinations for what you think will lead to at least someone's who's not as bad as whomever is in the job now.

the wider issue is running the risk of making the election 100% about Iraq

I'm not convinced that's either a good thing nor a winning approach. Maybe it is, to make everything about Iraq/Foreign Policy 100% 24/7/365 but at the end of the day you're either going to wind up with a loser (e.g. someone who didn't win the election) or a president who doesn't have the least interest in the USA itself. Seems to be the Dems should focus on a strong national leader who's concerned with putting together a strong foreign policy, policy team and some initiatives. But a president who you think is going to be the Iraq or Anti Iraq President is probably not going to be a smart move in the long run. Clearly whomever is elected is going to keep US troops and businesses in Iraq through the end of 2011 the earliest. So that means you'll effectively have a do-nothing president and a loyal opposition from the Salon nosebleed seats screaming ever more stridently to no effect. In the meantime everyone will want to hold whatever weak domestic agenda that president comes with, hostage, in the name of Iraq. Sounds like a bad plan.

But who am I? Just call me an names and be done with it. That works to. After all, new ideas in America are dead.

This means that people and animals are prfoundly different

Be careful what you wish for. This could be used by creationists to assert that people are fundamentally biologically and chemically different from animals.

And yet, and yet

Saloniks are the least pragmatic people on earth and scream and complain nonstop that ideology trumps all no matter what. Oh well I guess some ideologies are more better than others. Not that it matters in my state - voting Dem in NC is a waste of effort and voting in the primary is a statement at best. Still - he won't run on a third party so we'll vote for Dennis in the primaries, if it still matters, and we'll vote for which ever democrat gets the nod. Doesn't really matter who though, they're all pretty much interchangeable.

there are averages and there are averages

One of the lesser remembered problems with xDSL is proximity to the CO. In the US you have to be w/in 18000 ft of the CO and you can't have a mini-CO-on-a-pole which is little more than an digital signal repeater in between. Otherwise what the telco will quietly do is bond a few ISDN channels together and call it xDSL. Most people can't tell the difference anyway. Also any community that drags Fiber to the curb is screwed since there are no standard xDSL over Fiber protocols.

The other average to consider is the asymetricality of the line. Whether it's Asymmetric DSL (ADSL) or cable, the difference between uplink and down link is vast. With cable it's typically a factor of around 10. In other words your downlink speed is 10x your uplink speed. So even if you get 8Mbps on cable (which is insane - no one outside of special business premium services gets that) your uplink is 800kbps. Mine is half that on a good day.

The third thing you left out is that Korea has wireless broadband which is faster than 95% of the US cable service. You can get 6Mbps to your phone or PDA or data phone. I would kill for that.

The US is at least 10 years behind the times and falls a little further behind every day because your FCC wants to ensure that phone and cable companies make the most money humanly possible. That and they're too busy deciding how much to fine people for breasts and bad words.

What Lisa Jervis means is you can only vote for people based on their feminist cred

But what about all the countries of the world that HAVE elected women leaders? Like Norway, Iceland, Chile, Germany, Argentina, The Philippines, Israel, UK and others I'm sure.

In the meantime the World Bank gave Iran a $900 million dollar loan

So there's that.

This is the perfect Salon test bed

An Islamic state breaking apart into varying degrees of fundamentalist rage + workable, tested, deployable nuclear tipped IRBMs. I'm sure no bad can come of this. And any way - Hiroshima.

You mean if there were a right wing Chritianist Turner Diaries style takeover of the US

We should hand over the nuclear keys because 'that's the will of the people'?

My passport is current, thank god.

Half of America claims first hand up close contact with

Jesus

Elvis

Grey Aliens

So what's a UFO here or there? Neil Armstrong claims to have seen one. Is HE a crackpot too? Better a President who sees a UFO than one who gets told to sit in the corner by the voices in his head.
