Of course it's a meaningless exercise

Everything Congress does is a meaningless exercise. Bush couldn't have wished a better Congress into existence than this one. It has officially and for all time given credence to the Dictatorial Presidency and the irrelevance of the separation of powers.

The sad thing is that Dems, once they attain the Presidency are just too pussy to wield the power they've been handed and we will be stuck with a government that is the Presidency and only the Presidency but it will be a worthless weak ineffective whiny Presidency that concerns itself with silly issues.

Yes I said this months ago

Mortgage companies are going into senior care and health care in a big way. They will sell you loan then siphon off the value directly into their own health care firms that are ready to provide care for you 'in your own home', which the resident really no longer owns.

Should be fun to watch mortgage companies evict sick people when they run out of healthcare. I will be laughing as I put on my blue Walmart greeters vest and don't starve.

But in a bizarre twist California regulates some of the LEAST polluting machines out of existence too

There is a whole class of motorscooters 50-250cc that are entirely legal in every state except CA because of some odd twist in the emissions they give off. Even on their worst day, a 250cc scooter pollutes an order of magnitude less than an old car.

If that happened

A significant number of websites would stop working. IE is large enough and different enough so that web builders do often exploit lesser know unique functions in it. This means that there is a goodly number of websites that only work, or work well with IE (the IE engine at any rate). This is why FF add ons like IETab exist, to take advantage of switching out the engine on the fly where a website can't work right with FF.

And, as I said before there is already a good number of browers that use the IE engine like Maxthon so I'm not sure what beating Microsoft over the head about this, accomplishes.

Lastly, IE7 is not that bad. It's waaaay better than 6 albeit it has enough incompatibilities with 6 to keep it from being rolled out in corporate houses that build lots of in house apps with IE.

The US is about 7th in income disparity

Because honestly, the top 0.1% is really an outlier. Otherwise we're right in the mix with all sorts of other countries. Actually poor countries have wider income dispersion than rich countries.

do they have anything to suggest that that's actually the case

Or are you just playing to the cheap seats here, Andrew with the obligatory 'white man's war is the evil.....'

Let's burn all our Billie Holiday records

In protest-slash-ninny nanner role model-ism against her drug addiction. For the children. Wow you people sound like the audio department @ Walmart.

Dear America

I did felony class drugs and didn't get caught. If you're doing 7-20 under mandatory sentencing guidelines then it officially sucks to be you. Please make me your President.

Don't worry, it will soon be a protected class minority

In 3-4 years tops, having a high BMI will qualify as either a disability or a protected class minority. It won't change how fat people are, but we'll sure as hell get paid to feel better about ourselves. Considering that current course and speed EVERYONE in the US will be morbidly obese soon, it will be a new social welfare program and everyone will be fighting each other over who's fatter.

Wowie zowie state politics is corrupt

Well, Dog my Cats. Every governor in every state has a job that is 50% lavishing money on developers and contractors and 50% bailing them out of jail when they get caught.

Original article: Quote of the day

there's a reason we have bars at the zoo and signs that say don't stick your head in the lion's mouth

It's because people are stupid and there's always going to be some short bus bike helmet who thinks they're special or immortal. The bars and signs are an attempt to head off the smartest of the Re-Re's before they get eaten. It's not foolproof because for every idiot proof system the world brings you a bigger idiot, but it's better than nothing. So yeah - if you're too stark staring stupid to not know you don't get in a car at night in a strange place with a total stranger then someone's got to be in charge of your welfare to some extent.

But t'hat's exactly the point

Those dusky people far away with their interesting headgear get a pass, a quaint acceptance really. A kind of inverted bigotry or even outright applause. Whereas you transplant those same people here and all of a sudden you can't make up your mind whether the same atrocities are worse here because they're here or even more bizarrely the sense those cultures and customs transplanted here are made worse by US. Either way your level of outrage is inversely related to the distance an atrocity happens to you.

Weren't RAMs curtailed in Florida about 20 years ago?

I seem to remember they were. Maybe it's a just a full faith problem with the lenders. But, as with most things in Florida, as soon as you do something a little bit complicated, the millionaire snow birds claim they were bamboozled, hornswoggled and cheated. What they expected was to live for free for the rest of their life and then when it doesn't turn out that way they cry 'old people stupid!!!'.

I often wonder how people can get to retirement age with several million dollars in their hand and then almost overnight claim they were too stupid NOT to give that nice man their life savings for no clear reason.
