I sort of enjoyed this film. As a P&P "addict", I reread the book yearly and have seen three other film versions.
The Greer Garson/Laurence Olivier film was an abomoniation. Not only were the leads about - oh, say 20 years - too old for their roles, the film's director committed the unpardonable sin of changing the ending by having Lady Catherine go to Elizabeth with the intent of "helping" Darcy. Awful, awful, awful. I'm STILL shaking and I saw the film 36 years ago in highschool English class.
The 1980 mini-series was, I think, the truest version of the book. Maybe the actors weren't quite as good as the 1995 BBC production, but the "book" came through a little better.
I adored the 1995 BBC film (and who didn't?). The real problem with the latest version was how in hell can you film P&P in only 2 hours?
I dunno...I really enjoyed the show. And, I don't like most TV shows, but I thought this one has possiblities.
A lot of characters/plotlines in the first two hours, but most seem fairly interesting.
I read a pre-pub last week from my local bookstore. I'd read all her previous books (including the Mystery Mom seried) and I thought this book was, actually, fairly good.
The excerpt printed here was probably not the best to select from the novel. The plot is much more concerned with her loss of an infant daughter to SIDS and her inability to "connect" with her step-son, than with her affair with her boss. Yes, that's part of it, as well as her relationships with her parents and half-sisters, but the affair (and subsequent marriage) is placed in the context of the other issues.
It's not a bad read.
...in Conason's otherwise excellent article.
"Pierce" was the maiden name of Neil Bush's mother,Barbara, not Pierce's. HIS mother was the recently dumped Sharon. I don't know what her maiden name was, but I assume Conason was referring to Neil's mother, not Pierces.
What I fail to understand, which might just be stupidity on my part, is WHY Iran is the "problem" of the US alone? WHY is Bush contemplating tactical nuclear strikes by the US alone?
While I realize that Bush has basically burned his bridges with (all) allies by his actions in the last five years, why isn't anyone questioning the reality of the US unilaterally taking on the issue of Iran's nuclear capibilities?
Of course, I've wondered all along why we weren't marching in the streets against this administration...
The most implausable thing about these sea wreck movies (Titanic, Poseidon) is the fact that the actors are shown swimming, diving, etc through ocean water as if it was warm. Wouldn't ocean water, invading a ship as it sinks, be very, very cold? Too cold to survive in very long?
have spoken true words in their posts.
I'm fully in agreement. This administration could/would fuck-up a two horse race. What makes you think they could orchestrate an elaborate "hoax" like 9/11?
And, NOBODY in this country can keep a secret. You don't think SOMEONE would be snitching on a "conspiracy", second only to the likes of Kennedy's assasination?
With Kennedy's assasination, I agree with those who say that everybody, from the CIA, the FBI, Castro, the MOB, Texas oilmen, LBJ, etc, may have WANTED Kennedy dead, but I think Oswald - alone - got off three lucky shots.
Sometimes the truth really is the simplest explanation.
...because I can get some differing views of the news. I'm glad Salon published Manjoo's article about Kennedy's RS article.
I've a little trouble with "conspiracies", because like another writer who published up the line a few pages, a conspiracy must involve lots of people who can stay quiet.
And, that's very difficult to pull off.
I mean, lots of people in 1963 might have wanted to see John Kennedy dead - Texas oilmen, the Mafia, Castro, LBJ, the CIA, the FBI come to mind - but I still believe that Lee Harvey Oswald - and he alone - got off three lucky shots with his old rifle.
I also believe Kerry - who I worked for and voted for - lost because he ran a lousy campaign and couldn't fend off the Swift Boaters and other dirty campaigning, engineered by Karl Rove.
I also have a little trouble with RFK's objectivity. As with still another writer, I questioned his previous articles on autism. AND, he's still out there, trying to convince the public that Michael Skakal is innocent of the Martha Moxley killing.
I wonder if Busby's off-the-cuff (and off-the-wall) remark about illegal immigrants voting cost her the election?
