Are you really this clueless?
[Read the article: Facebook: Shut down that privacy-invading ad program!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]And if those people truly are your friends, they will standby you regardless of those things. They may actually be able to help you cope with them. Imagine that, sharing feelings with loved ones, and maybe getting something out of it.
Riiiiiight. So if I - let's say, a straight guy in high school - search for a book on "Coming Out" to give to a friend who wants help on the issue, and my Baptist parents see this on my Facebook thread, they will automatically understand the situation, won't they?
They will believe me when I say that the book was not for/about me, right? And they will not kick me out of our home for good - rendering me homeless at 16 - because Facebook decided to make an extra buck, right?
Your idealism about people is wonderful. Unfortunately, I live in the real world and thus can see how poisonous this system can be.
********
Also, what if I am taking an International Studies course, and I search for a book on Islamic fundamentalism to write a paper on?
And someone who has access to my profile happens to be a paranoid Republican who calls the FBI and Homeland Security?
That would never, ever happen - right?
It's people like you, kufir77, who believe that the PATRIOT Act does not go far enough. Who believe that the Gov't or anyone else should be able to read all our mail, listen to all our conversations and even put cameras in our bathrooms if "necessary" - and why?
Because, like you imply: if you're a good person, then you should never, ever have anything to hide (read: keep private).
******
I wonder sometimes about the Second Amendment kooks who say they own guns to protect themselves from the intrusion of tyranny.
But defenders of Orwellian tactics such as you, kufir77, make these gun nuts seem slightly less crazy every day....

Speak for yourself, Anonymous # 1,235,863
[Read the article: "Atonement"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Book lovers invariably start with the assumption that reading, not moviegoing, is superior.
I have to call bullcrap on this specious, unjustified generalization.
I am BOTH a bibliophile AND a cinephile. At least a couple of my close friends are the same way. A deep love of reading does NOT automatically turn one into a snob towards other art forms, such as films! Your elitism is rather ignorant, to say the least.
I can be (and have been) inspired, infuriated, overwhelmed and moved to tears both by the written word and the motion picture. And yes, I acknowledge that many movies based on book adaptations have not lived up to the quality of the source material...
However, IMHO many films have done right by their source books (Fight Club)...and *gasp!* may even be superior - Silence of the Lambs comes to mind...

She's slagged on Tyra out of bitterness
[Read the article: Quote of the day]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Janice used to be a judge on Tyra's "America's Next Top Model" for a couple seasons - until she was, ummm, "replaced".
My guess is that her slagging Tyra for being fat is not so much her honest opinion as it is petty, vindictive bitterness...you know, "Mean Girls" style.

Umm, kufir77?
[Read the article: Mike Huckabee's gay and lesbian thing]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I live in the Midwest, where crystal meth use is more predominant (and a bigger social pandemic) than anywhere else in the USA.
Virtually all of the countless people who use crystal meth in these states are low-income heterosexuals living in rural (and some urban) areas.
Where exactly do you have VERIFIABLE information for a large sampling group that homosexuals in general use crystal meth at a higher rate than heterosexuals??

Not everything your preacher tells you about "them sodomites" is true, kid.

The bottom line: black celebrities can do no wrong
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily ]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]For the rest of eternity, any black person who commits a crime of any kind - rape, murder, abuse - should not be sent to prison, or even arrested and arraigned in court.
Why? Because of slavery and past racism.
How is this not clear to white liberals? You're supposed to have guilty consciences, aren't you?
------
I'd be interested to hear Thrasher et al's take on the murder of Sean Taylor, a black NFL star, by four black men.
What do you do in this scenario? Do you still let them go free for being black - even though the person they killed was black themselves (and a black celebrity/star to boot)? How does this work when it's black-on-black crime?

So many underestimate the Hilary-hatred of the Right
[Read the article: Who is the most "electable" Democrat?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]There are many people I personally know who tend to be center-of-right - and who are very disappointed in this election season's field of GOP prez candidates.
If Obama, Edwards et al win the Dem nomination, most of these people may simply not vote. Really.
BUT, their decade-long scorn and loathing of Hilary is so incredibly strong that if Clinton was the Dem presidential nominee, they would vote for anyone - and I mean ANYONE - just to stick it to Hilary.
Hell, Larry Craig could be the GOP nominee - and if he's going up against Hilary, people will come out of the woods to vote for him, just to make sure Clinton loses!!
-----
Someday there will be a woman president. And Big Bill, I still love you after all these years, man...
But I cannot deny this truth: there is only one candidate who can lose this election for the Dems - and it is Hilary. Her polarizing effect is even greater than that of a Obama...and he's black man running for office in the USA!
