  • Ellen should simply have asked for permission first

[Read the article: Ellen, the dog bullies and me]

Look: if you worked for a child adoption agency, and you allowed a couple to adopt a child after doing a veeeery careful screening of them...

...only to find out that a week after the adoption, they gave the kid away to another person/family you knew NOTHING about...

...wouldn't you be infuriated as well?

What if the family Ellen gave the dog to ended up abusing the hell out of the poor pooch? How would all of you who are defending her actions have felt about that?

Adoption agencies - whether animal- or human-related - are brutal in their screening process because these animals/kids deserve to go to the best possible new home.

And turning around and giving away an adoptee to another family without AT LEAST consulting the adoption shelter/agency first is foolish - and possibly dangerous for the adoptee.

  • From "Scrubs":

One of the lead characters, Elliot (female), cannot stand the word "vagina"...so she says "vajingo" instead!

Hilarious - and to me (male), much more cringeworthy (which only makes me laugh harder).

Turbodiesels with the latest-generation cleanliness factor (BlueTec et al) give great low-ed torque, great mileage and run very quiet; I'm hoping the rumored Accord diesel will be as excellent as it sounds!

  • If not supporting (& gently parodying) Hillary is misogynist

[Read the article: Trick or treat with Clinton and Obama Girl]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Then is supporting Hillary over Barack (and parodying him via an Obama girl costume) automatically racist as well?

I mean, it's the same basic logic, right?

Is a female liberal who dons a Guilani mask on Halloween obviously a man-hater? Or an Al-Queda sympathizer? Or Anti-Italian?

Also - SNL's Amy Poehler routinely plays Hilary in a savagely yet hilariously parodic, satirical way. Does that mean she is obviously misogynist as well?

This "make fun of Hillary = you're a misogynist pig" line of thinking is as fallacious as:

"Don't Support Bush = Terrorist Sympathizer"

    and

"Dare to criticize Israel policy = Anti-Semitic Nazi"

    ******

Are their misogynists out there who hate/mock Ms. Clinton solely because she is a woman? Sure.

Does that justify making asinine, knee-jerk reflexive generalizations about anyone who dares to poke fun at a political figure (regardless of gender)? Hell no.

    Cheers,

    sorry for the typo

[Read the article: Are kids worth the cost?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I choose not to have kids.

I also don't drink expensive Starbucks Lattes.

And I don't refuse to have kids because it will cut into my "shallow, materialistic, consumerist" lifestyle. I'm too poor to even think of that - and even if I were richer, that would not be a desirable way to live.

I barely make $20K a year. I try to be as frugal as possible, saving up money for a used car (which would make life much easier where I live) and an eventual house or condo. I do not believe I could afford to give a child a comfortable life, even if I wanted to have one.

I spend my free time - time I would otherwise have to devote to my children - volunteering at the ASPCA shelter, and at the local VA hospital.

I'm not saying this to pat myself on the back...or to vilify parents who invest all their time in their children.

My point is this: if you have kids, all power to you. I will not stereotype/generalize you in any -ve way.

BUT because I choose NOT to have children, you feel free to vilify and stereotype me as some selfish, crass, shallow materialist who chooses lattes and dining out at expensive restaurants over raising a little Tyler or Dakota?

    How wonderful.

    *****

I've got two words for you....but you should cover your innocent little ones' ears before I say them.

  • No problem, JeffreyD

[Read the article: Are kids worth the cost?]

I had felt that your first post implied that while many parents have to make material sacrifices (very true), those who did not want to have kids were by default choosing to live a selfishly hedonistic life. That is why I responded so vehemently.

I appreciate your second post/apology. I wasn't so much offended as I was annoyed by what I thought was more irrational mudslinging in these Kiddie Wars...you know, this whole "I'm more selfess than you/You're more selfish than me because I choose/choose not to have children!" bickering. As I said: whatever your choice, all power to you.

Thank you for your second post - and I also wish the best for you and your kids, and everyone else.

And please, everyone: when you form opinions about people who make different choices than you, remember that in their context, those choices might simply be best for them. Peace.

  • Very scary: I actually agree with W.E.S.

I'd take Moss over T.O. any day of the week....and 4 times on a Sunday. =)

Having lived in MN (and being a cheesehead myself) - I couldn't help but laugh in disbelief when the Vikes let him go...

  • Which "Cafe" is that?

[Read the article: The divine sound of silence]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

They were playing "Sweet Child O' Mine" at a cafe? WTF?!?

That would actually be pretty cool to me - seeing as all the cafes I have ever been in only pipe reheated Norah Jones & Ani Di Franco crap through their speakers.
