  • Thanks, Joan....

    Your last post (in response to mine) actually did help me understand your explanation.

    I guess that looking at it in this way (i.e. juxtaposed with the tedious unworthiness of a female: Zelasko) really does make it an equal opportunity lambast, if you will! I'm sorry if I reacted harshly based on an initial assumption of the tone of your description.

    ******

    As for Messrs. Owen and Powell, I really have no desire to or intent of engaging with you about gender cultural politics -because from your knee-jerk responses to my post, it would be a pointless flamewar instead of a nuanced debate.

    For the record, I am not an American, not conservative, not a white male, not threatened by women in power or by egalitarianism....and, most importantly in this case, not easily offended.

    Heck - my favorite TV show for many years now has been South Park (the heir apparent to the Simpsons throne of biting/animated satire); IMHO, Parker & Stone (The creators of South Park) spare no one from their satirical/parodic eye - which is what makes the show so frickin' great.

    The point I was trying to make to Joan (back when I was misinterpreting what she wrote) was NOT that I was offended by her comments on men, but this: it should be all equal-opportunity. If a woman can write it, so can a man - and vice versa - with a similar, sensible response. Whether a generalization or a commentary, whether snarky or not....the response should be equal. That's all.

    I hope this makes sense. But if it doesn't, feel free to keep ascribing ludicrous, pointless stereotyping (Limbaugh/Hannity fan?!? LOL...I'm listening to Air America right now, in truth) to me as much as you want.

    Unlike with Larry T, it all rolls off me like water on a duck's back. =)

    Cheers,

    Lw

    Great comic this week, Carol - it reminds me of the wonderful film "The Science of Sleep".....

  • Thank Ruth it is Over....

    A record chase that was rendered meaningless by steroids is finally over. For that, as a baseball fan, I am most thankful.

    And as far as Bonds being an "underdog"? A multimillionaire who demanded a La-Z-Boy and flat-screen TV be placed in the locker room for his sole use only, who alienated fellow players (Jeff Kent, anyone?), who continually disrespected icons of the game like the Babe....

    ....and, yes, who was so insecure about his ability (huge ego aside) that he cheated when his natural talent would likely have allowed him to break the record anyway.....

    ....is not an underdog in any way, shape or form.

    ~~~~~~~~~
    Meanwhile, Hank Aaron showed a level of class that Bonds will never, ever have or understand.
    What's that, you say? I greatly admire Hank (who is black)....but I must also automatically be racist because I don't kneel to kiss Bonds' feet?
    Excellent logic there.
    {I eagerly await Garry Owen's knee-jerk reflexive, foaming-at-the-mouth angry reply in defense of Bonds...}
  • Great article....but there's a little typo to fix -
    [Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
    Ankiel's resurrection began in 2005, when he decided early in spring training to give up pitching and quite baseball...
    I think you meant to say "quit", King.
    Nice comeback story! I remember watching Rick's meltdown on the mound in 2000, and how painful that was. He seems like a good guy, so all power to him for plugging hard and making it back - as a hitter (!!)
    Q: Why watch Fox at all?
    A: The Simpsons.
    {If for no other reason than the creators'/writers' moxie in refusing to put gloves on whenever they {quite often} satirize Fox News, Fox TV, News Corp and even ol' Rupert himself....}
    Btw, I don't at all agree with Anon's knee-jerk rage about Carol's latest strip....but Carol has indeed shown some pretty heavy-handed antipathy toward the "evil" of scientists over the course of her "WayLay" work.
    She's free to have her opinions, of course. And truth be told, I often admire her comics (this latest one included)....
    But we scientists aren't all evil, amoral and hellbent on world domination/destruction (cue "Pinky and The Brain" theme music ), dear Carol. I myself am working on cataract and vision research that might someday help keep your own eyes nice & healthy to keep drawing & writing...so why not take us out of your crosshairs every now & then? =)
  • To Apfel and the other "elite" writers:
    Watch the movie "Closer" sometime.
    Jude Law's character? He's definitely a writer - as Clive Owen's character so beautifully points out during an intense scene late in the movie.
    And I? Well, thankfully, I am a mere caveman....and that much happier and more fulfilled because of it.
  • Dissent does not equal grumpiness
    [Read the article: Tom the Dancing Bug]
    [Read more letters about this article: Here]
    Why is it that LWs like cloudberry always default to "Uh oh, someone woke up grumpy" whenever another writer makes a strong stance against an article or comic?
    "Someone woke up grumpy" is as meaningless a psuedo argument-winner as "Why, that sounds like something Hitler would say!"
    It also reminds me of right-wing talk-show hosts after the 2004 election, who smugly dismissed liberal disappointment in the Bush victory with, "C'mon libs, don't be sore grumpy losers!"
    *******
    By the way: I'm not the first letter writer.
    And my morning is going fine so far.
