  • Ummmm, Tjinder....

Your band had exactly one mediocre hit song - Brimful of Asha -and it became infuriatingly annoying to listen to faster than even the 'Hamster Dance' tune...

....and you're ripping on RadioHead?? RADIOHEAD?!?!?!

    What's next?

Avril Lavigne ripping on Babes in Toyland?

That manorexic kid from Silverchair tearing the Ramones and the Clash a new one?

Justin Timberlake saying James Brown wasn't worth sh*t?

Blink-182 saying that the Pixies were awful and weren't "real" punk?

Good grief! It's almost as hilarious as all the Warrant & Winger fans trashing Kurt/Nirvana for making their striped yellow spandex pants go out of fashion...

My local grocery chain has a plastic big recycling bin for customers near the entrance. Once a week I take any excess bags I have around (i.e. the ones I don't use as garbage liners) and put them in the recycling bin...

I also take plastic bags with me when I shop so that the cashier doesn't have to pack my stuff in new ones. A bunched up ball of ~10 bags takes up very little space, say, in a knapsack...

...and I do all of this without feeling the need to pay 15+ dollars to pretentiously, self-righteously broadcast that I am *ahem* green!!

The environmentalist / eco-friendly movement would achieve a lot more progress (especially in Middle America) if it stopped acting like conserving our resources was just an elitist fashion statement.

  • Q & A

[Read the article: How did baseball botch its tribute to Willie Mays?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

    The Question:

Why does Jeannie Velasco get to be snotty about Barry Bonds? But let me not be sexist; why do so many tedious unworthy men get to be snotty about Barry Bonds?

    The Answer:

For the same reason they - and every other baseball fan out there - get to be snotty to Pete Rose. Both of them tarnished the sport that made them who they were.

Without the 'roids, Bonds probably could have broken the home run record legitimately...and would have definitely been one of the greatest of all-time.

But he made an active choice to cheat. It's analagous to one of the best marathoners in the sport running at a world-record pace through, say, mile 21 - and then jumping into a car and driving the last 5 miles to the finish line. (And worst of all: thinking he fooled any of the spectators by claiming innocence...as he steps out of the frickin' car!)

    *****

Because of his choice, Bonds will be merely remembered in the annals as an unrepentant cheater...and his asterisked record will be rendered meaningless by Pujols and/or A-Rod in ~10 years, anyway.

That is why Zelasko, unspecificed "unworthy" men, and any other person out there even remotely familiar with Baseball and its tradition get to be snotty to Bonds.

    Any other questions?

  • Enough with the Straw Man, Powell

If Clemens used steroids, then he has besmirched baseball and should be kicked out and/or vilified (and I say that as a Yankees fan).

If you keep looking for Straw Men to use, there sure are plenty...Giambi, McGwire, Sosa etc. etc.

But whether the Rocket (or anyone else) abused or didn't abuse is immaterial to Bonds and his tarnished legacy.

And by the way, please stop insulting Darth Vader by using him - even as an exaggeration - to describe the public/media's view with Barry.

Vader was a conflicted villain who eventually returned to virtue in the end. Barry? We ALL know he will never be repentant or remorseful...

I agree that Larry T crossed a line with his simplistic, sexist put-down of Joan's Bonds fandom as being based mainly/solely on wanting to **** Barry. Such an asinine statement has no place among reasoned debate.

On the other hand, Joan: you have to admit that if a male writer used the description "tedious, unworthy women" anywhere in one of their articles, then women everywhere (e.g. Broadsheet, perhaps you yourself) would be utterly livid at the writer's apparent sexism (even if he gave the same explanation you did).

I guess what I'm saying is that if you had said "tedious, unworthy sportscasters" - or something gender-neutral along those lines - then there wouldn't have been any issue with this at all.

As it is: when I read your article, I just rolled my eyes at this - yet another unnecessary, puerile jab of generalization at Men, from someone who purports to oppose sexism and gender prejudice....

REAL respect amongst men and women can only be fostered by putting an end to all snarky jabs and comments from BOTH sides.
