Cruft is one reason.

Another is that Macs have a simpler hardware base. Windows has to do a lot of poking and prodding to figure out what hardware is there and what drivers are needed. Macs work with a much smaller hardware base.

To see what difference this can make, just load up one of the Linux distros. Time the bootup process. Then compile into the kernel just the drivers required for the hardware you have. You will find it boots a lot faster.

Now, the shut down is a little different. Under Windows in general, shutting down processes is a time intensive process for reasons that aren't clear to me. Maybe it does some fancy garbage collection when it deallocates the memory that the process claimed or doing updates to the registry. Macs probably just write out any state information they need and shuts off without shutting down the services and processes one by one.

It is likely overconsumption of energy as the main factor.

Texas is a big state. When you take out the major metropolitan areas, it is also thinly populated with a lot of small towns separated by wide distances of nothing much. Given that the vehicle of choice is a pickup truck, there are a lot of miles driven in low gas mileage vehicles.

Which is not to say that illegals aren't a factor. But the geography and demographics play a big factor.

Monkeys in the trees?

600,000 years ago?

Not hardly.

Neandertal was about ready to hit the scene. We had been walking upright and been tool users for many a millenia by that time.

Umm, on the subject of Shiner...

It isn't really a bock. More of a dark lager. Now, granted, most American beers are pilsners, which is on the light end of the lager scale, but Shiner Bock is on the same scale.

True bocks are apparently closer to malt liquors. Which Shiner Bock is nowhere near.

You need to reevaluate.

There seems to be a lot of angry people here...

And I don't think it is really justified. We are talking kids here, one of whom grew up, if not rich at least in a home where investments were a part of normal life. And I am not talking about investing in education, either. The LW didn't. Her parents were closer to the edge. I suspect that they might have been closer than she ever realized.

I won't comment on her choice of schools. Depended on what her specialty is, they may have been the best use of the money. I doubt if the debt is so huge it can't be paid off in a reasonable amount of time.

As far as the immediate issues, though...

As others have noted, your parents don't owe you anything more. They are on a fixed income, let them have what they have.

Next, don't let your husband cast your parents in a bad light. It looks like there was some bad blood there. However, your parents did not short change you in any way. It very well may have been that if they were to have paid for your education, all they could have done was the local community college. If that. I know you love your husband, but you don't have to adopt his attitudes about your parents. His parents made more money. And it almost certainly isn't because they made smarter decisions or better choices. Most people are not irresponsible and it isn't particularly likely that your parents were. Unless you have good proof, don't buy into the meme that they weren't responsible. Your husband is not a good judge of that.

It is pretty common for those who are well-off to attribute it to their sounds choices and hard work. Sometimes, that is true. Usually, it is not. I am guessing you have been told by your hubby that your parents had too many children. If they were only wiser and had fewer, y'all would have been better off. Maybe. Maybe not. Which one of your siblings do you think should have not been born? Unless you have like a dozen siblings, it wouldn't have made all that much of a difference. Despite what you have been told.

Your parents raised a daughter who qualified for private schools and is now an intern. That shows a lot on their part and they were able to raise you so you have a wonderful shot a life, albeit one where work takes up a large chunk of your time. Be proud of them, and yourself. Your husband has some growing up to do. Most of his patients will be more like your parents and not like his parents.

Not saying you have to be confrontational. Just be more realistic.

Am I crazy?

It depends. Are there things that we can't explain? Yes. What I find interesting is that some reported effects, electricity meters spinning real fast and automobile speedometers pinning, work on a common principle. Eddy effects which can be generated by rotating magnetic fields. What that means, I dunno, but it is interesting since I don't think most people know this.

Do you believe that aliens pick up people for rides, experimentation and sexual pleasure? Then you are a nutjob. Interstellar perverts just doesn't make any sense at all.
