Probe Raises Afghan Civilian Toll to 47 in US Attack
The toll from Sunday’s US airstrike in eastern Afghanistan has risen to forty-seven civilians, most of them women and children. An Afghan government investigation raised the toll from an initial estimate of twenty-seven deaths. Afghan officials are calling for prosecuting US military forces involved in the attack. The victims were attending a wedding party. Overall civilian casualties are on the rise in Afghanistan. The Red Cross says 250 Afghan civilians have been killed in military or insurgent attacks in the last six days. NATO figures show more than 900 civilian deaths since the start of 2008.
We face a government taking away privacy here in the States, while weak governments everywhere face death and brutal attacks. Is Iran next?
We need to find a way to constrain the central government in all of its activities, as strength in one area will lead to strength in another area. And a strong government will enslave you, or kill you. It is the power thing.
The men and women who work in "national security" feel themselves above all law and moral constraint. They see only that "the enemy threatens our very survival". There is no way to cure such madness, the only option is to pull it out roots and all.
Thanks for that post. From my heart; thanks for that post.
... they will fail.
The rule of law is far more than a few at the top obeying the most obvious dictates of the constitution. Far more than that, even if that is a minimum requirement.
We need the people to have an organic, internal sense of what our constitution says, who it protects, and why. We need the people to rise up and protest even the smallest affronts to the rights of Americans.
"There otta be a law". Years ago, there was a cartoon series in my local paper that had that saying as a punchline or perhaps it was the title of the thing. Everyone wants "law-makers" to enact laws to make others behave as they wish, and to punish anyone they dislike. That is pure democracy, two wolves and a sheep voting on who to eat for dinner.
It is time for a Political Party to rise up and promise "the most freedom for the most people" while absolutely protecting the weak and the minority. Rules set in advance and agreed to, rules that follow the basic traditions of civil rights and morality, and rules that do not favor any individual or group over another simply because they have more than 50 percent of the votes this year.
We need a new constitution. The old one is broken beyond repair. Proof? The poor man can not read it and understand it, because the words are encoded and can be decoded only by a priestly set of men and women in black gowns. It is just like the ancient mystery religions with its inner mysteries and its outer mysteries. How do you expect anyone to respect a document that does not meant the same thing to various groups of people in various times?
As an example (one of several million I could pick from); when did the constitution change its wording/meaning/mystery to allow the police to grab someone's car and keep it if a fellow he loaned it to was caught with a bag of sticks, stems, and weeds in his possession. In fact, we now do not even need for a conviction to be obtained, as asset forfeiture is seen as the right of the police to steal whatever they desire.
Send me a note when the Democrats (or anyone else) promises to fix the totally out of control "justice system" and the laws that uphold said system. Oh hell, that or send me a note when some politician promises to abide by international law and stop murdering people in foreign lands just because they have the power to do so.
The polls are whatever the fellow paying for them wants them to be.
I promise you this: the Democrats will wipe out the Republicans at all levels this next election no matter how stupid the Democrats act between now and election day.
I read on a news site that down in the battleground state of Florida where McCain must win that new registrations to vote are running 7 to 1 in favor of the Democrats this year. 7 to 1.
I also read that some Republican muckety-muck said that the Republicans did not have a single "safe seat" in the coming election. Not one?
Will the Democrats winning in a landslide help the cause of Freedom? Most likely it will not help a lot, but millions are betting that it will help some after the abortion called the Bush Administration.
