Is that Dem leadership continues to treat it as a red state. So they ran Bluedog Bob Pro-Life Casey to beat Santorum in '06 and now they'll be running Arlen I've been a Repulican most of my life Specter to beat Toomey in '10. Such a strategy would have been rational if either Santorum or Toomey were popular moderates in the Ridge sense, or if PA had long history of being red (e.g., the Dems running the moderate Webb in VA). But here it's unnecessary. Run a MOR liberal like Sestak and be done with it.
Nice to see Salon have a little fun at Obama's expense. Readerreader is right (even if I disagree with his politics). The late night's comics jabs at the prez have had all the teeth of the pedophiliac old guy on "Family Guy". My guess is the only guy willing to take off the gloves with him would be Stern (whom I haven't listened to in years), if only because Howie attended a predominantly black high school in his youth and didn't grow up in the more racially sheltered existences that I'm guessing Stewart, Letterman and most of the cast of SNL did. In short, those rough-and-tumble formative years can breed an "eff political correctness, i've been on the losing end of it" mentality.
Oh well. Back to the economy. And for the love of god would Sestak (or anyone) please run against Specter in the primary? We already have one Joe Liebermann. We don't need another. Unless it's a southern state/best we can reasonably hope for strategy, which is not the case in PA.
You're missing the boat when you say the bonuses were not excessive in a market sense. Most of us can't relate to such a market sense. (I'm guessing you can't either.) What we can relate to is our outrage that employees are being rewarded millions for failure by a company that, without our help, would have been declaring bankruptcy.
And though I mostly agree with you about Obama's problem, you reveal your true tunnel vision when you blame deregulation on Clinton. It's like a tick with you guys. Anything that goes wrong, it's Bubba's fault. Get over it.
According to CNN, he just admitted to inserting the loophole in the AIG stimulus that allowed for the bonuses. At least that's what I'm catching off the AP wire.
I tend to agree. I think Sansho (and others) are mixing definitons of inflation with those of a bubble, which are two separate things. That is, I suspect many people knew the housing market was inflated but most thought the inflation would never end, or if nothing else, did not suspect the market would actually "pop" and deflate values by 30 or 40% in a few years.
We're mocking the head of the RNC for speaking the language of pro-choice? Do we really want to do that? I actually found Steele's comments refreshing.
readerreader -- it wasn't Matthews best moment but to say Fleischer looked good seems a bit of a stretch. On at least two separate occasions he said Obama should thank Bush every day for having rid the world of Saddam Hussein. Really, Ari? Obama should be thankful for the mess in Iraq he was left? Wow, some gift! I also think he said something right near the end about Hussein not being able to attack us again, which pretty much revealed how Bush and co. sold this fiasco in the first place.
Oh yes, I know Stewart makes fun of Dems, I just think with Obama most of the stuff comes off as half-hearted or too nice by a half. Count me among those who believes that part of equality is being able to laugh at each other, and (therefore) hopefully with each other, equally.
I just thought the show was at its peak during the middle of Shrub's dreadful eight years and seems to have lost some of its edge since.
Anyway, still a fan, just don't think the show is in the "must-see" category it once was. But thanks for the reply and hope you're having a nice day.
Is how lame "The Daily Show" has become. Some of it can be attributed to loss of talent (Colbert, Carell, Helms, my fave Courdry and host of others). But a lot of it has to do with Obama. In some ways, it's defensible in that Obama rarely makes a fool of himself. In others, it's cowardice in that they're either afraid to upset their audience, or more likely, scared to say anything off-color (pun unintended) that could result in an Al Sharpton-led boycott. Hence, we're left with SNL and their "Rock" Obama skit (wow, how cutting!) or Letterman spinning tired jokes about Bill Clinton (way to be topical there, Dave). In short, political correctness and civilty are fine for many aspects of life, but for comedy they're a death knell. Who knows, maybe the answer is a black, conservative-voting comic who wouldn't be afraid to take the gloves off. Let's be honest, had Hillary won you know there would be some laughs made over the fact that she's a woman.
Oh, and to the original post on this thread. Yes, Stewart (as well as Olbermann and Maddow) are one-sided, but that's the point: they're the left's answer to Beck, Hannity and O'Reily, and with the exception of Maddow, a whole lot funnier.
