@David Cohen
[Read the article: Obama on Father's Day]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Looked at David's letters ... thoughtful and cogent and he uses a real name as I do. I think Salon would do better if folks were not able to hide behind nom de plumes. Come out Come out where ever you are and stop the anonymous flaming! Joan Walsh hates me (or not) but at least she knows who I am and I know who she is. I admire her a lot. I post here because I am personally invested in our collective future. I was impressed with Al Gore this evening. I think he captured what is at stake as someone who understands that close is more than shit farts, hand grenades and horseshoes. I would appreciate Joan's comments. I think all issues are off except getting rid of the fuck ups. Sexism (Joan's notes accepted) and racism can wait but only if we do the most important things. Can we? Yes we can.

[Read the article: Pipe down, Cindy McCain]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]chatter about subtle makeover is coming not from the Obama Camp but from press .. who seem to need to parse minutia to death and ignore http://www.truthout.org/article/us-general-accuses-bush-administration-war-crimes Why is this not front page everywhere?

meaning of
[Read the article: Pipe down, Cindy McCain]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]It occurred to me to wonder about the origin of "pipe down". Here from answers.com:
Stop talking, be quiet, as in I wish you children would pipe down. This idiom is also used as an imperative, as in Pipe down! We want to listen to the opera. It comes from the navy, where the signal for all hands to turn in was sometimes sounded on a whistle or pipe. By 1900 it had been transferred to more general use.

in my work place
[Read the article: McCain's offshore oil-drilling flip-flop]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]In my small work place I have noticed over the years that it better not to take the stand at the wrong time. Obama needs to keep a coalition together until an election and then with more power in the House and Senate make the changes that are needed. At the moment he is a junior senator and will have no real power until he (I hope) is elected president. I think the signs are that it will be a land slide .. then repairs can begin. I was disappointed too but I think he is looking at timing. Timing is everything. His explanation was nuanced in support of process and noting the defects of the result. It would be hard for him to say that the "party" is f'ing nuts true as it is at the moment but suing AT&T isn't the pressing issue of the day.
What I hope is that when he wins in November he will announce his attorney general immediately and tell all in the current administration that all records both paper and e-mail must be intact and that loss of same or any changes to records is in itself criminal beginning with the President and down the dismal food chain. Maybe Martha Stewart? Isn't she a lawyer? Hillary would be a great choice too. My personal favorite is Patrick J. Fitzgerald. He even put Conrad Black in jail.
I hope barak doesn't announce the end of a national (world) nightmare and pardon anyone.

[Read the article: McCain's offshore oil-drilling flip-flop]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Hillary Clinton is also a junior senator and would have no real power unless she became president.
The FISA dustup at the moment a house matter. Check what senators do with it.

Pablo
[Read the article: George Carlin dies at 71]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Love the Pablo Cassals reference ... my childhood hero since I started cello at age 5. I used the lovely Karsch photo of Pablo viewed from the back as an avatar years ago ... how lame is that?
Interesting reach from GC. Sad for me at age 60 for many reasons. It's time for all of us to treasure every day. GC was my favorite cynical bastard ... you know the optimistic type who is right most of the time and waits in vain for the rest of the world to get it.
Thanks Joan Walsh

FISA?
[Read the article: George Carlin dies at 71]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Do I understand that there is agreement here that FISA broke GC heart and it is Barak Obama's fault. Didn't notice that nuance before I thanked Joan Walsh. Can't resist a dig? Why not mention Nancy Pelosi. This has not reached the senate yet. If he is elected president he will rewrite FISA already. Sheesh.

[Read the article: George Carlin dies at 71]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Not so long ago Paul Begala wrote an interesting article comparing Hillary to the the great Jackie Robinson. She has broken ground of course but baseball?. With due respect to the odd connection and the chutzpah inherent in it we now are looking at the Obama story and the really odd connection with George Carlin. I think it is time for Joan Walsh and Glenn Greenwald to cut Barak some slack. He is playing the Yankees with Pee Wee Reese calling him a fucking Nigger from the short stop position. He bunts to get to first base and then in truly all American fashion steals second and then third and then of all things steals home. In the folklore it is not theft ... it is playing baseball with all odds against you and you have to be polite and take all the shit thrown at you. You slide with spike up to home base and then shake hands with the catcher as he picks himself up off the ground. So the world series is won and then he is asked about FISA? Go figure. Barak Obama is on a tightrope without a safety net with the world watching looking for missteps. Maybe try cheering for him. Joan Walsh and Glen Greenwald are intelligent and cogent but are really in the cheap seats yelling "DON"T BUNT" lard ass.
