By absurd coincidence, I emailed Mr Ledeen this A.M. and asked the same question: if Iran was at war with us since 1979, why don't the Iran-contra crew qualify as traitors?
His claim is that, since the sales were vetted by endless lawyers and the President, they were legal. He apparently developed this argument in his book "Perilous Statecraft."
I've not read the book, so I don't know how solid his argument is; and I have my doubts that any sale of arms to the enemy during wartime could be legal--even if signed off by the President; but he does have an argument. Of course, I look forward to a legally-minded blogger like Mr Greenwald (or Publius at Obsidian Wings) digging up Mr Ledeen's book and shredding his argument.
1) The refugee camp name is generally Romanized as Shatila--one "l", not two.
2) The massacre occurred in September 1982, 26.5 years ago, not 28 years ago as Kamiya repeatedly says.
