Juan Williams?

I can't believe that's Juan Williams. Doesn't seem like the same person who did a great job hosting Talk of the Nation on NPR. Guess I didn't know ya, Juan.

hilarity lost

Quite a sell for this "hilarious" video but it just ain't funny. Waste of bandwidth. Sorry.

Integrity is for losers?

Yeah. Ultra-partisan activities like forcing voter precinct re-districting that blatantly favor your party is to be commended. That's how our democracy avoids falling under the power of tyrants (as DeLay put it). If only the Democrats would abuse power so resourcefully instead of acting with some modicum of integrity.

Davell Hill still not funny

Is this guy your brother, boyfriend, or what? Perhaps funny if you know him. Not so much for the rest of us.

Hooray!

I stopped reading comments awhile back because the tone of the "conversations" taking place was often mean-spirited and lacking in any sense of productive discourse. I hope this changes that trend. I agree with others that anonymous posting shouldn't be an option.

If she made me laugh...

her ill-conceived, overly-confident views of topics like global warming would be worth reading. But I'm not laughing. Not amused. There's no joke. Put my subscription revenue towards something worth reading. The more I think about my money going towards someone writing such b.s. about global warming, the angier I'm getting.

7 years ago Hagel was best known for his anti-environmental postions. He attended the Hague Climate Talks as one of the infamous "Gang of Eight" and made bold statements that global warming science was bunk. http://www.net.org/proactive/newsroom/release.vtml?id=21275

I think it's a testament to the times we live in today that Hagel appears to be a voice of reason--even conservative dissenter. I appreciate this article because it helps me understand a little more of the complexity of Hagel. It's easy to vilify him based on his past actions. Yet there is much more to someone than their roll call votes. It also reveals an individual who considers his beliefs and whether he agrees with them. Back in 2004 this would be understood as "flip flopping." Perhaps Hagel can help his fellow conservatives understand that reconsidering a position is sometimes commendable.

20-30 minute wait?

There should be a clarification to this article. Farhad states that in order to watch a tv show with AppleTV and iTunes "...you've got to wait 20 or 30 minutes, at least, to start watching something." I know that's not true of iTunes. You can start playing the show while it's still downloading. Perhaps he means you can't get it to play on the AppleTV until it gets fully downloaded from iTunes? I'm not sure since I don't have AppleTV. Anyone know? Also, he should clarify whether his 20-30 minute download length is for 30 or 60 min. shows. The Daily Show will download on a modest DSL connection in about 15 min. tops. You can start watching it about 60 seconds after you purchase and it starts downloading.

Lovely high country dream

It's a sad moment as the charms of summer have suddenly been cracked off by departmental meetings and prepping for another semester. This article lets me dream a little of kicking back on a high country lake shore without a care in the world. What a lovely escape. Thanks.

What about all those votes?

Sure, there's a titilating factor to this story. But there is also a factor of personal responsibility which Craig needs to own up to.

From CNN's story this morning:

"Craig has also opposed expanding the federal hate crimes law to cover offenses motivated by anti-gay bias and, in 1996, voted against a bill that would have outlawed employment discrimination based on sexual orientation, which failed by a single vote in the Senate."

After you've replaced your bulbs with CFBs...

and taken other steps to reduce your household energy needs, the next step to take is either opting out of car culture or adopting a mostly vegan diet. Either step is going to really alter your lifestyle. For a lot of people, changing what they eat is just going to be easier. Parking the car (or SUV) and relying on public transportation might reduce your global warming impact more than a diet change, but not many people are in a position to choose that (thanks to short-sighted city planning that relies on car culture).

Give that man a real microphone

Hey Salon,

Why do these A/V postings have such bad sound all the time? Salon Conversations is often sub-par just like this one from Michael Scherer. Buy a lavalier mic and plug it into that camera. Get your production value at least higher than what a kid can do on his/her own.
