Original article: Torture and the rule of law

@RetiredMilitaryPatriot

No, I didn't see your post but I'm glad you made it and glad that you posted a link to the Moyers program. While I didn't get to see much of Moyer's program I knew that Mickey Edwards had spoken out about the lawlessness of the Bush administration on many occasions. I think including the Edwards and Fein brand of conservatives in this fight will only strengthen our efforts. It will also have the added benefit of poking a giant hole in the media's spin that it's only those in "left field" who care about protecting the rule of law. I'd actually like to see Olbermann do an entire hour's program where he had people like Fein, Edwards, Dean, Greenwald, Nichols, Turley, Hamsher and others discuss what's happened to the rule of law under Bush. He could then follow up that hour long episode with a once a week segment where these people could continue to discuss this crucial subject. Can you imagine how many You Tube videos of those discussions would spring up all over the internet. It would be wonderful.

Obama Supporters on Far Left Cry Foul, in today's New York Times.

wlegro, thank you for posting this link. While it is very depressing to read it makes me so mad on so many levels that it just inspires me to fight that much harder. It also reinforces what I posted earler about getting the message out that there are many people of various political stripes who are against the FISA bill.

The BS lie that the media is peddling about how anyone who objects to eviscerating the 4th amendment must be someone from the "loony left" or in "left field" is so infuriating. And the hell of it is that once people are finally convinced we were right then the media will write stories that it was the center of the country that helped restore 4th amendment rights and there will be no more mention of those on the left.

@rReilly

Reilly, the fact that these people are repeating what they hear in the media is precisely why I say that the media is peddling it. I agree it's very depressing that so many of the Obama supporters are parroting this harmful narrative. I ended up sending an email to the NYT reporter. It probably won't do much good but at least it made me feel better.

I hope Glenn and others will start posting diaries at dkos and blog posts at HuffPo to try to influence some of these ignorant people who repeat such destructive narratives. I don't think they have a clue that they are supporting the very system that will try to destroy their own hero.

Hollywood pressured over torture portrayals

Here's an interesting article from the Chicago Tribune.

@Reilly

I couldn't agree more. I actually posted a comment on that Bromwich piece in favor of what he said.

Standing up for the rule of law on FISA could have made Obama 10ft tall in this election instead he chose to go along to get along and ended up diminishing himself in the eyes of many, many supporters.

I'd love to see you write a dkos diary talking about how Obama not only voted the wrong way on FISA but how his actions have also had a very undesirable effect upon some of his supporters. Perhaps by pointing this out you can help mitigate the damage.

Excellent FISA Diaries on dkos

Selise has put together two excellent diaries at dkos on FISA. Both diaries are full of important links that provide us with a great timeline of how the Democratically controlled House sold us out on FISA. I hope everyone will recommend these two diaries and post a comment or two.

Looking back at FISA's year in the House

This diary is my attempt to document and deconstruct the political theater we've witnessed from the House of Representatives, and specifically its Democratic leadership, in amending FISA this past year - from the passage of the Protect America Act (PAA) in August 2007 through the passage of the so-called "compromise" FISA Amendments Act in June 2008.

Not only has the Democratic House leadership worked to pass bills that undermine our constitutional rights and prevent accountability for the Bush Administration's illegal acts - in effect endorsing Nixon's view that if the President says it's legal that makes it so - they have explicitly rejected the principles of open, honest and responsive government in order to do it.

Part I is the timeline.

In Part II is the analysis: How did we get such bad legislation from a Democratically controlled Congress?

Finally, in Part III, are my conclusions and a proposal.
