Your accusation of betrayal presumes that somehow women had given their word to vote for Obama. Nothing of the sort every happened. Women, so it seems, were inclined to vote for a fellow woman much as you and other blacks are inclined to vote for a fellow black. I couldn't blame either group for doing so, as either a female or black President would be terrific for this country. However, accusing people of betrayal for voting contrary to your desires is misguided.
I'm voting for the candidate who is speaking out most strongly for social justice and in defense of the most hated group in this country: the poor.
EDWARDS 2008!
Hillary Clinton has been the Democratic front-runner for months and months. She was the front-runner in the NH polls for months. Why are we surprised that she won? Sure, Barack Obama pulled off an upset in Iowa, but that upset did not obliterate the history of Ms. Clinton as a front-runner. Her win made perfect sense.
On the other hand, John McCain was the really comeback guy. Remember how his staff all quit a few months ago and McCain was written off as a lost cause? Willard Romney was supposed to win big in NH, but it was McCain, shockingly. There's your big surprise of the season.
EDWARDS 2008!
When I was in Thailand I discovered durians. Though I never got used to their horrible smell, eventually I came to actually like their flavor, though I much prefer a good apple instead. I just came up with the name "DurianJoe" on a lark, amongst other screen names, and for some reason chose it for my Salon handle. (My real name is RambutanFrank).
Anyway, guess what? I did some Googling a little while earlier and lo and behold, there is a Chinese restaurant in Rockville, MD that sells Stinky Tofu! That's about 30 minutes from where I live. I just need to make sure that they make their's without fermented/rotting fish, since I'm a vegan. Otherwise, as with much else, I'll just try to make it myself.
Incidentally, some of the best meat analogs for sale in the USA are made by Buddhists in Taiwan.
Daveypdx: you're right, that is a glaring oversight by Pollan. We eat crockpot beans three times a week in our house, and we use recipes from around the world. Right now I'm cooking up Peruona beans with vegan chorizo, onions, corn, and chipolte peppers. Beans are where it's at: delicious, healthy, and inexpensive.
And of course, they're good for your heart...
Physician, heal thyself.
Last year I went to see a vet about one of my cats. The issue was chronic renal failure. I told him of my concerns about a certain course of treatment he suggested, and when he asked me where I'd learned that information, I told him, on the Internet. (I had researched the disease and its various treatments all week, from reputable websites).
He just scoffed at me. He's no longer my vet. For those who care, my cat is doing very well -- not on the treatment the old vet suggested.
I heard Richardson give a speech shortly before the New Hampshire primary that was one of the best stump speeches I've heard during the entire campaign. From ending the damn Iraq War to repealing No Child Left Behind, to ending torture and spying on Americans, and on and on. If Edwards wasn't running, I'd have been cheering on Richardson.
It's a damn shame that two small states have deprived the other 48 states of very qualified candidates like Biden, Dodd, and Richardson, especially when the latter never got a chance to exploit his popularity in the Southwest.
Richardson, like Biden, would make excellent VP's. Given Richardson's latino heritage, if the Democratics ends up with either a woman or black man as our candidate, having Richardson on the ticket really would demonstrate a new era in America's politics, for the better.
I worked as a dishwasher and waiter in a nice restaurant, and I never saw anyone do anything to a customer's food, even if the customer was a real jerk. Then again, maybe we workers were all too drunk on the boss' generosity with his bar to give a damn. :)
Fortunately Edwards, my candidate, is still in the race, but it's insane that two little, rural states have such a disproportionately large effect on the nomination process. If I was a Richardson or Biden or Dodd supporter, I'd be even more upset about the process than I am now.
Don't know where you live, but if you're represented by that hack Albert Wynn, all I can say is: Donna Edwards!
EDWARDS 2008! Two time over!
Pudgy-wudgy Jonah Goldberg has ridden his harpy mother's coattails into a job as a hack rightwing pundit. He has very little talent and even less capacity for critical thought. The fact that he has gotten so far with his mommy's help as to be discussed in Salon is a far more interesting phenomenon to be discussed than his instantly forgettable "book."
