Laustinspace, it's not that simple. (And bebop-o)
[Read the article: Go ask Alice]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]"Consider why you have two working adults and work 40/50/60 hours a week. What are you saying about your life priorities?"
That's a fine sentiment, but it's also naive. There are many American households that have two working adults who can still barely get by. It may take them more than an hour commute each way because the cost of housing is too expensive to live closer to their jobs. If they have children and no day care, they have to find money for that; then they must deal with their children before and after work. Weekends are filled with chores and errands and hopefully some leisure.
"Life priorities" for many people comes down to food and shelter and clothing, and given life in the USA today, that means working the long hours and long commutes, just to keep your head above water.
Why don't we have a 35 hour workweek, since we now live in an age where technology supposedly increases efficiency, and both individuals in a two-adult household work full time? Answer: because the present system works very well for a very small but very powerful ruling class.
(bebop-o, thanks for the offer, but Mrs. Durian Joe wields a mighty frying pan).

Slow cooking = slow cooker
[Read the article: Go ask Alice]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Ms. Waters does ask too much of the vast majority of people in this country who have neither the time nor resources to follow her suggestions, but there is way to eat healthy, organic, and delicious food for very low cost: get a slow cooker, a.k.a. a crockpot. Basic models don't cost much, and they can change your life for the better. Then buy a rice cooker.
Bulk organic beans are inexpensive. Bulk organic rice and grains are inexpensive. Loose organic onions and carrots and greens are inexpensive. Throw the beans and veggies into the slow cooker in the morning, throw the rice into the rice cooker in the morning, and you let it cook all day while you work. When you come home, make a salad and dinner is ready; the leftovers are good for lunch.
Every culture has bean recipes, so by using different beans and spices you can have a wide variety of dishes. Cooking other bulk organic grains can also mix things up. It may not be Alice Waters-style gourmet food, but it does the trick.
If you can't always find organic, you can almost always find bulk. Go to any "ethnic" market and you'll find huge sacks of rice and dried beans, often at very little cost per serving.

Hitting is not okay.
[Read the article: What's so funny about abusive girlfriends?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]One myth that needs to be dispelled is that women are the weaker sex. My fight class teacher was a woman, and she was, and still is, quite capable of beating most men to a pulp. She's not a giant or a bodybuilder, she's just fit and trained. If you know how to fight, you don't even need the fit part. For example, one quick jab to a person's throat will incapacitate them long enough for you to attack them further, and so on and so on.
If we can get past that sexist nonsense about women being the weaker sex, we can get to the underlying issue, which is that is it never okay to batter someone, regardless of the gender of the attacker or victim. It's an immoral and criminal act, period.

Silenced, good points, but you're wrong about politics.
[Read the article: Pick your pretty poison]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]If you think politics are confined to the human world, think again. Chimps and gorillas and dolphins are just some well known examples of species which play politics, with ever-changing alliances and plots and coup d'etats.
The more scientists discover about nonhuman animals, the more they find who little they differ in so many ways from people. Since we're talking about cosmetics, that's yet another reason for people to only buy cruelty-free cosmetics. In many cases, those products will coincide with less toxic ingredient lists.

Max, I know plenty of women who can fight.
[Read the article: What's so funny about abusive girlfriends?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I'm talking streetfight, not pitty patty sparring.
I don't know any man who is not also an expert fighter who could survive a fight against my fight class teacher. My classes were full of young women who were learning how to fight -- not box, fight -- and win in a vicious encounter with a thug.
Maybe it's a generational thing, or maybe its the emergence of a new kind of martial arts that stresses realism and survival fighting, but I have seen excellent female fighters, and I've been bruised more than once by women half my size who happen to fight really well.

Anonymous Troll
[Read the article: Pick your pretty poison]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]~~~ wrote, "Already you go to more jail for beating your dog than you do for beating your wife." That's a typical troll nonsense statement.
When a person gets a light punishment for a heinous crime against another person, that makes the news. When a person gets a heavy punishment for a heinous crime against an animal, that makes the news. To suggest, as ~~~ did, that animals enjoy greater legal protections in society than do humans is, to repeat, typical troll nonsense.
You might be more impressive yourself if you came out from behind your anonymous disguise.
