Housework is for women (as seen on TV)
[Read the article: Working women's wife envy]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Funny and sad that for years now, this story seems to repeat itself somewhere in the media every few months, i.e., even among couples where both individuals work full-time, housework is performed primarily by the woman. It's probably better now than it was 10 years ago, but I have no reason to doubt it's still a problem.
All you need to do is watch TV commercials to see that the gender stereotype is constantly reinforced. Every commercial for the latest miracle broom, or fabric softener, or grotesque pre-packaged meals to foist on children, features a woman using the product. I have yet to see a commercial where a man smiles idiotically while demonstrating the joys of the latest advancement in mops, or where a man offers his kids and their friends, as they come running through the door, a glass of sugary crap. It's always a woman.
As with many other things, one of the keys to societal progress is to turn off your kids' TV and give them a good book instead.

Wow, a government that rejects science in favor of quackery.
[Read the article: AIDS crisis? What AIDS crisis?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Sound familiar?
Anyway, it seems that South Africa is doomed, much like the rest of that continent and ultimately, the rest of the world.
Human stupidity and greed are the true forces of nature.

Is there a toe sucking scandal in Shrum's future?

Well Bob, you've always got a gig waiting for you at Faux News.

A world of balloon breasted women? Yawn.
[Read the article: Under the knife, into debt]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I'm old enough to remember when actresses like Raquel Welch and Ann Margret were considered to have very big boobs. Now, those two would be considered mid-range.
Frankly, it's gotten ridiculous. At first these enormous boobed women were sexy, but now there are gazillions of them and it's, well, boring.
I admit that I've never actually laid hands on fake boobs, so I can't comment on how they feel, but I would guess that natural is better. I hope there's a backlash. Women should not feel compelled to undergo risky and expensive surgery for something as unnecessary as giant boobs. Having enjoyed natural boobs both large and small, I can confirm that in the end, that old saw is right: it's personality that really counts, and a woman with a sexy brain is the hottest woman around.

Yet more unnecessary animal experimentation.
[Read the article: Sex drives of mice and women]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Does the world really need experiments on mice to research sex drives? Must mice undergo the ordeal of these experiments, only to be killed afterwards to have their brains sliced up and examined? Could life as we know it go on without this insane cruelty? Of course. Bu
There's a reason that Gandhi called vivisection "the blackest art."

Anonymous, my little ray of sunshine.
[Read the article: Sex drives of mice and women]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Vivisection is a word commonly used to describe all animal experimentation even if, precisely, it means to cut apart the bodies of live animals.
You seem to have an unhealthy obsession with my letters. Better examine your navel to find out why.

Sign of the times.
[Read the article: Wife abuse vs. dog abuse]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I think that the vast majority of people are disgusted by cruelty to women, cruelty to animals, cruelty to children and, in general, cruelty itself.
That said, I cannot forget a sign I once saw while protesting a pigeon shoot in Hegins, Pennsylvania (a "family affair" where men shot pigeons released from cramped cages, and where boys ran out to the field to twist the necks of those birds only wounded: all for fun and charity!):
"My wife yes, my dog maybe, my gun never."
Make of that what you will.

Free speech in the age of the Internet
[Read the article: Pedophile blogger unfairly targeted?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]This is a really fascinating case, and I expect we'll see more along these lines.
This guy McClellan is a creep, no doubt about it, but has he broken the law (other than that restraining order)?
Before the Internet and the ability of anyone to put up a website, this guy would never have been noticed. Maybe he would have made some cheap pamphlets and left them around town, but I'm guessing probably not. The Internet, though, gave him a world-class venue in which to further pursue his abhorrent desires, and so we all are now talking about him, and the Government is after him.
There's a similar case of a creep in Florida whose Internet cite celebrates cockfighting, which is thankfully illegal in this country. He posts videos of cockfights made where they are legal, such as the Phillipines. He is promoting a crime in this country, not to mention a morally repugnant activity. Should he be stopped?
I hope McClellan is represented by a superb First Amendment rights attorney. I hope he is prosecuted by an equally superb prosecutor. I hope his case goes all the way to the Supreme Court, because legally, we are all in unchartered territory. The legal opinons in this case will be fascinating.
Personally, I'm torn between seeing him banned from running his disgusting website, and from seeing his First Amendment rights protected. Valid conviction for promotion of a crime, or unconstitutional persecution for mere expression? In the end, I'll settle for him getting run over by a bus.

Shadow

Seriously, anyone who defends dogfighting must be dead, or at least, bereft of a soul.

Conservatives support dogfighting?
[Read the article: Wife abuse vs. dog abuse]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]"Libbies?" Shadow, you're a conservative. What a surprise.
AKASmith, as I'm sure you know, there is a proven link between people who abuse animals and people who abuse people. Fortunately the police are taking this link more seriously than ever. Society is waking up, albeit some members more slowly than others. Some people will never wake up, unfortunately -- that's why we have laws and cops.
Whenever cruelty to animals makes the news, a few throwbacks always dismiss it as no big deal. I like to ask people who aren't sure about it whether or not they'd let someone who abused an animal babysit their kids. They always say no.

Shadow, I'm off my rocker?
[Read the article: Wife abuse vs. dog abuse]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Coming from a guy who defends dogfighting, that's a compliment.
See you in the funny pages.
