Data Mining and Reporters
[Read the article: The leak designed to save Alberto Gonzales]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The story that data mining was the real reason behind the imminent resignation of top officials does not stand up to light of day.
They'd been doing it for a while, they were comfortable with it, and there had been no reason to not continue it-until the funding got cut off.
That means there had to be a really bad thing going on that triggered the threats of almost simultaneous resignations from the DOJ-something I don't even want to know about, really.
Perhaps we will never know, from the looks of the reporting that is being done. The Washington press corps is totally corrupted and they don't even care. They shouldn't even call themselves journalists for this craven sell-out to the administration.
As for the real scenario of what could have been going on? Perhaps mass arrests and internment of innocent civilians because they had gotten enough "evidence" from data mining to start a concentration camp-something that we did once before; The Japanese-Americans can tell you something about that.
Don't tell me it isn't a realistic scenario-given that the administration has been strenuously defending the wiretapping program and now wants to "expand" the FISA limits-to absolutely everything goes.
As for Gonzales, he lied under oath. He is impeachable, and should be removed for not only this but for the way he has completely decimated the DOJ into a political arm of the WH.
It's totally rotten to the core. Watergate was never this bad, and Bush isn't even bright enough to figure out that he's an accomplice to "high crimes and misdeamnors" in this.

Faith
[Read the article: War, chaos and Bush's faith]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]There are millions of Americans who voted for Bush on the basis of his religious faith-a true believer, like themselves.
They believed he was one of them, and voted for whatever consequences that vote would bring.
They also cheered wildly when he invaded Iraq, not conscious of the misleading basis of that invasion.
They believed that he had an "ok from God" to do this, and believed that he was right.
How many of them are left today? I wouldn't want to guess, but there are some, and you can read them on the letters to the editor pages of any newspaper, defending to the death their leader and his insanity.
Faith is blind, and the ultimate gamble. Bush didn't have loaded dice, that's for sure.
WB Yeats poem "The Second Coming" says it all:
"...Things fall apart;the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world.
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned..."

Worshiping Cheney
[Read the article: The Dick and Larry Show]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Larry King was right not to have changed his style just for the VP. Why should he?
Cheney has not earned any respect from anyone except Bush and Gonzales while he has been in office. He has destroyed whatever respect should be given to the office of the VP single-handedly.
For those who worship Bush and Cheney, go pray to your little statues and hope they're not listening in on you, or that you will be targeted for prosecution or death for not having the "right" religion or position, preferably kneeling.
Lots of money helps, too.

So what are we to do about this?
[Read the article: The three stooges]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The article is very good-but the problem is that we have to get rid of Gonzales. That much is clear, but who and how to do it is the biggest problem.
I've read where Congress has the power to impeach him-will someone there please do this as to remove the entire stack of cards?
Because, if Blumenthal's reasoning is correct (that Bush is protecting everyone with Gonzales' body) then everything will become crystal clear when the dust settles.
I once wrote the NY Times about Gonzales (back in March), and pointed out that he wasn't going anywhere. Sad to say, I was proven correct as events have unfolded.
I'd like to be right again, that he can be taken down; but the trick is doing it right and correctly, so none of the other fish in the net can escape.
Otherwise, we're stuck with this mess for another year.
I don't know if the Constitution can stand much more trampling...

I'm tired of being shocked
[Read the article: Is the White House lying about spying again?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]What a spineless, gutless bunch of scaredy cats we have in Congress.
They'll suck up anything Bush tells them is wrong and then vote it in, believing every single word.
FISA did not have to be changed. Bush just wants more power to spy on other people who he thinks want to talk to supposed terrorists. Does not matter if the intelligence on the other party is flawed.
I wonder how they get all those phone numbers anyway? Data mining, one supposes.
Doesn't matter if "terrorists" do have a brain and don't always use the same phone twice. Just give the administration what it wants and it will go away.
Oh, and your privacy? That went away too. Your rights to sue the government? Forget about that, buster. You have no rights and you're guilty until proven innocent.
Thanks alot, Congress. That was a nice Constitution we had.

Powell is no saint
[Read the article: Will the real Colin Powell stand up?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Colin Powell knows the truth, knew it back when it all started; he doesn't dare tell the truth because this administration is capable of destroying him by whatever means it has.
When one leaves public office with a certain security rating (which he had), one is required to sign a document stating that they will not discuss in print or any other way the certain things they know.
For Powell to state publicly what he knew would enrage the administration enough to pull the strings to destroy his pension and his life. He doesn't dare tell the truth, ever. He likes his life just the way it is.
Don't ask, don't tell: that is the Army's motto for gays and people who dare to buck the line. You get punished for doing it.
