  • Bill O'Reilly, Republicans & Hitler

[Read the article: Bill O'Reilly has a very tiny ... blacklist]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Americans in general and Republicans in particular love to trot out the "he would have shrugged at Hitler" trope. It seems to me that Americans did, in fact, do a fair bit of shrugging at Hitler between 1939 and 1941; not to mention harbouring a fairly strong pro-fascist wing of the Republican party. America First, anyone? Lindbergh? Gore Vidal? Gerald Ford?

    Anyway, America....stop it!

  • People are still watching Lost?

[Read the article: I Like to Watch]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

If Abrams (or ABC) had an an ounce of integrity, Lost would have begun and ended in the first season. British television has a good deal to teach us about the virtues of the short run.

We are too forgiving; and we stick with things too long because we are lazy.

  • Regretting My Renewal Already

[Read the article: The unkindest cut]

Well - it took exactly 8 days of the new year for me to regret renewing my Salon Premium subscription. This kind of frivolous and soft writing has always been my problem with Salon. If this is how it's going to be, maybe you should just get under the Oprah umbrella and call it quits. Hey, why not bring back Anne Lamotte too?

  • Season 3 Sucks

[Read the article: The man behind "Battlestar Galactica"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

BG is just dragging along this season. It has the same disease as Lost - simple greed. One or two seasons would suffice, but they will drag it out until the ratings are in the toilet - at which point we will be treated to a rush job wrap up. It's a shame.

  • I call bullcrap on Kirsten Powers

[Read the article: The real Fox News Democrats]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"If you're going to follow Howard Dean's 50-state strategy, which, last time I checked, most of the bloggers supported, then it seems sort of strange to me to be disregarding the top cable news network. From a strategic standpoint, it doesn't really make sense to me."

From a strategic standpoint, it seems to me that the viewership of Fox News is effectively an ideological monolith that could be safely ignored. Does Kirsten Powers really think there are votes there to be had? Even if some of those could be turned, is Fox News really the place to do it?

The uncharitable view of Ms. Powers would be that her statement is more a defense of her Fox paycheque than a call to reach across the ideological divide.

  • Thanks - it's about time

I'm a bit disappointed, however, that you will not be requiring the use of real names.

  • Jazz Snobs

[Read the article: Rock vs. jazz]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The problem is not snobbery per se, it is that peole too often willingly constrain themselves to a single genre, contending that it is superior to all others. A lot of the jazz fans I know own and listen to nothing but jazz (ditto classical fans), while you are much more likely to find jazz and classical material alongside rock and pop in the collections of those who identify as rock and pop fans.

Oh, wait, I guess that *is* snobbery.
