I love Alec Baldwin on 30 Rock, but I don't think that he should have even been nominated for Best Lead Actor. He may have the most lines of the men on that show - I am not sure- but his part is so much smaller than Tina Feys (and than the other men in that category), that it seems silly to call him the lead actor. It is Tina's show, and there are a bunch of good supporting men on it, with two or three men switching off as the biggest male character from episode to episode. There were almost as many Tracy Morgan, as Alec Baldwin episodes.
So while I was glad to see 30 Rock win big last night, I really thought Steve Carrell should have won last night.
Finally, Heather you missed one of Don Rickles best line. When he opened the envelope he said "and the the Emmy goes to ... Hardy Dickman" (or maybe it was "Kirby Dickman"). Yes, it was silly and juvenile. Coming of Rickles mouth though it was perfect. He slipped it past the censor and had me laughing.
I haven't gotten all the way through these leters, but let me second a couple of nominations:
Hit Somebody (The Hockey Song) by Warren Zevon
Tessy by Dropkick Murphys
And I haven't seen this one yet:
Sweet Lou by Pearl Jam (lyrics link below)
It is not among their best, but it is one of the few decent basketball songs out there. Plus the fact that Pearl Jam's original name was Mookie Blaylock has to be worth something... Or not.
Yikes, its has not been a good week to be a sports fan in the upper midwest.
First, the Twins lose a tough to the White Sox for the last playoff spot. That one wasn't so bad, since one the teams had to lose and I don't mind the White Sox (they're probably third on my rooting depth chart for baseball), but it was still a tough one.
Then the Cubs get swept and the Brewers lose 3 games to 1. And the White Sox are hanging by a thread against the Devil Rays down 2 games to 1.
Finally, the Badgers blew it against Ohio State, wrecking their chance at a Big Ten title. And the Packer's do likewise against the Falcons. Ick.
Yes, I know that there were some exceptions, which is unavoidable when upper midwest teams play each other. The Gophers beat the Hoosiers, and the Bears destroyed the Lions. It is hard to take too much solace from those games since the losing teams were so awful.
wetnoodle,
Yeah, Ohio is in the midwest, but I wouldn't consider it upper midwest, would you? Even Chicago may be a stretch as upper midwest.
And yes, it probably was largely just a bad week for me, but it is pretty interesting how quickly a really good summer for baseball in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnesota has (almost) come to an end. For a while in the middle of the summer, it looked like all four baseball teams from those states might make the playoffs. Now, unless the Sox come on fire, it will be over.
Though it looks like you meant to pick Green Bay.
This is right of the Brer Rabbit and the Tar Baby
Brer (Obama) Rabbit says "Brer (McCain) Fox, for the Lord's sake, don't fling me in that briar (Ayers) patch,"
Of all of the petty, silly things for McCain to talk about, that has to be me near the top. I am sure that Obama will be ready to knock that one out of the park if McCain brings it up.
steveinmidtown,
As one of the poor souls who is currently represented and embarrassed by Michele Bachmann (note the spelling Broadsheet), thanks for your support.
Bachmann is a loon, but unfortunately this is a conservative district and Elwyn Ticklenberg is something of a stiff. Ticklenberg had an outside chance before this brouhaha because he earned the Independence party endorsement, avoiding a 3 way race like last time. (In 2006 the race went 50% Bachmann, 42% Patty Wetterling, and 8% Independence party candidate John Binkowski.) Ticklenberg is not a very inspiring candiate, but he may be able to pull in enough independents.
While I am somewhat hopeful that enough people will come to their senses to send Bachmann packing, I fear that the most likely way that I will get a sane representative is through the 2012 re-districting process.
the next step to take this would be to figure how likely it is that any particular team would have won the number of pennants it did. This would give another perspective on how lucky Yankees fans are compared to Indians fans.
Alex,
How has all Al Franken not caught Norm Coleman? Almost every recent poll has them within the margin of error, with most having Franken up. A couple of polls this week, had Coleman up, but the leads are small. That race is a toss-up at this point. The link below has a list of poll results through last Friday.
Here in MN, I-Party Dean Barkley is hurting Franken.History has been more take away from Dems, Michelle Bachman and Gov Pawlenty were winners due to I-party siphoning votes in their races.
While Dean Barkley may be hurting Al Franken, Bachmann would have won regardless in 2006. Bachmann got 50%. The Democrats problem that year was largely that Patty Wetterling was not a very good campaigner.
On the other hand, Coleman is a player. he started out a Dem in his first St. Paul mayoral term, switched when Dubya was popular then backed him hard until 2006 congressional election when Klobucher swamped the Republican by 20% he started trimming his political sails tacking to the center.
While Coleman is a player, he switched parties in December, 1996. He switched so that he would have a chance to run for governor in 1998 - the Democratic field was too crowded.
