@zenwick

Who gets beaten by white folks for acting black?

Apparently you have never seen my James Brown tribute. And I don't think "musical hate crime" was within the range of fair criticism.

Sunday, March 23, 2008 04:45 PM

@zenwick

Having checked the Obama website, I can assure you that hiding in the bushes to beat up black school-children will not be part of Mr. Obama's educational programs. Your concern for these kids is, however, commendable. Thanks.

"He attended the man's church for years while he was spewing that bile".

"One is "swell" and the other is "lousy"!"

"Okay, now what were the words?"

Get a clue Proxy, baby, get a clue.

Sunday, March 23, 2008 04:56 PM

@ Proxy, Baby

Proxy, my friend, the last time the black Church in America roused itself we didn't get a violent racial revolution. We got the Freedom Rides and Marches, a new golden age of Gospel Music, and the Civil Rights laws, finally.

We ended up with the Civil Rights laws and got Aretha Franklin, too (and many, many others, into the bargain)

I'm willing to take that chance again. Bring it on!

Thine Alabaster titties gleam...

I get hassled for being too white by white people who like to bake in the sun. I have the skin of a newborn babe and I'm well over 50. My sun tanned and bronzed contemporaries, many of them younger than myself, look like leathery old shoes.

-- Settembrini

And I bet you have most of your own teeth, too! Well, spare a thought for me, friend, gumming my food with a bad complexion!

Oh, the unfairness of life! I mustn't let my deficiencies make me resentful of other's good fortune, tho.

Warnings of a Disagreeable Proximity

My only concern is with the mentality of someone who finds such a man agreeable.

Proximity Warning

And that, too, is very commendable. And you coming over here to warn us about him denotes an almost unheard of political altruism.

Oh wait Proximity, my wife says it's not unheard of! What's that honey? Oh, she says they're called "concern trolls"!

See that Proxy, you learn something every day. "Concern troll" That's droll! Droll-Troll... get it, Proxy?

In this case, primarily full bore - with the emphasis on 'bore'.

Kate Tex

You said it Kate- I didn't. But I will agree, that's your case.

Sorry, sorry, just thought of that line in "America the Beautiful" and it slipped out.

Sunday, March 23, 2008 05:17 PM

@Fester

And I thought binary meant "two". Maybe I shouldn't stick my two cents in your one bit, tho.

Sunday, March 23, 2008 05:28 PM

@ Settembrini

on the poor grunts who work there or the poor proles who might wander into that office.

-- Settembrini

I realise that "grunt" is a coloquialism for a low-payed or low-ranked worker or soldier. I find it vulgar, but acceptable, and I'd be the first to admit my linguistic sensibilities are over-wrought.

But there are no "proles" in America, Settembrini. There are only "citizens" and they have come from a diverse panoply of extractions. Did you, perhaps mean Poles? I'm sure many Americans of Polish extraction might consider joining the Armed Forces.

But the idea that there are "proles" here is anathema to me.

And anyway, do "proles" meet the minimum recruiting standards?

I live here among many, many military (and related) families. "Proles" they are not. In fact, they give every indication of considering themselves an elite. I don't know if they'd like being called "proles" so I'll do you a favor and not tell 'em.

."For a man to fully satisfy his wife...."

he should at least be able to write a sarcastic epigram so it makes sense. In your case, Proximity, I'm sure manifold attainments and an amiable temperament make for domestic bliss, no matter how non-sequitorish the conversation gets.

Sunday, March 23, 2008 05:49 PM

@ Settembrini and RMP

But look, here's my question and I ask you cause You guys probably know the most about it: Can the Iraq War go on, and go on being fought the way it is, if Obama is elected?

Since I do have to go to work (but will be back to see if you do desire to answer) now, I mean now (!)

Do you think the military can go on fighting the war if they cannot (even if it's in their own minds) depend on the White House for cover, and to implement their own, and the White House's worst instincts? Won't it fuck them all up?

Would you waterboard for Obama? Sure, you can count on Bush to have your back, but Obama?

Thanks to all, gotta go.

@michmog

white Western man has always needed his boogie-men,

Well, duhh! Maybe now I don't admit, but at one time I couldn't go a day without the Average White Band or The Village People, the Bee-Gees and how many others?

Michmog, we all need to boogie, everybody everywhere, and we all have our own boogie-men! Those are some of mine, what're your's?

I'll read your answer after work, bye!

Sunday, March 23, 2008 05:59 PM

white Western Boogie-men

My wife reminds me that KC, of the Sunshine Band, has offered to be our boogie man, as he puts it, "that's what I am"

And as far as some of the basic existential declarations which form our culture, I can only refer you to Popeye and his dictum "I yam, what I yam, and that's all that I yam!"

But I fear I am straying into Good Celery's agricultural bailiwick, and will desist. Besides, goddamit, I gotta go work!

Sunday, March 23, 2008 06:02 PM

This is a tough joint

Setti, do you want there to be proles? then we'll have proles.

And no, if the military was made up of rich elites, I'd expect them to pay for their own wars.

Sunday, March 23, 2008 06:09 PM

@DCLawl

In search of an easier opponent, I assume.

As long as I'm here, I'd be proud to run interference for you DCLawl. Hell, I'd be proud to take your shots!

But I'm going, so they're back to dashing themselves against your edifices. They haven't got a chance. I'm not worried.

Sunday, March 23, 2008 06:12 PM

@Uncle Fester

Thanks for responding. I certainly have no clue how any military people but the mostly enlisted and contract-workers I live with feel. Certainly not anybody of any rank.

Thanks again, I appreciate any information I can get on this subject.
