  • "If I understand him correctly..."

If I understand him correctly, he states that Americans have a need for values, and we can't just ignore that...

    LBS

Right you are LBS, and those values are in the Consitution and the Bill of Rights. As a Jew you really ought to know that. Or are you not aware that when all those religious values are written into the consitution we will be the only ones who are obligated to deny the devine Saving Power of Jesus Christ. Oh BTW, we can't submit to his Lordship neither.

Or were you hoping for both a Jewish and Christian Established Church?

The ultimate value in Christianity is bringing sinners to Christ. Do you want the resources of the government behind that effort, with the ability, the inevitability of sanction and discrimination of those who will not avail themselves of Christ's intercession with God so our sins can be forgiven.

That's you and me, baby. We are guilty of the worst possible religious transgression- the outright rejection of the Word of God.

Do you want your kids preached to by Christian missionaries at school?

And there's a nasty Yiddish name for guys like Rabbi Lerner, but this is a family blog.

I would advise Rabbi lerner to lean a little less on the favor of the Goyim and more on the Bill of Rights. He'll get a lot further.

  • Jeez, I hate to be cynical...

... but for all intents and purposes, America already has an Established Church! Go Google info on the "Faith Based" grants. $100's of millions of dollars, suposedly going to help "faith based organisations" with non-missionary projects. Now, what do you think the grant adjudication process is like under G Bush? Well whaddayuno, it's completely corrupt and certainly incompetent, as the grants go to a favored selection of organisations and the money is basically unaccountable for.

Has any of the candidates R or D mentioned getting control of this, or -gasp- shuttting the whole thing down? Nope, not a whisper. Notice, if you Google, all the ads for consultants to help you get your "faith-based" grants?

Congratulations Americans, we have reached the point at which "faith" can be quantified, qualified and recompensed!

    Praise God!

Recognizing a need for values (such as empathy) is at the core of our Democratic tradition. The Constitution alone does not call for a just society: we believe in ending poverty, supporting gay rights, supporting the right to choose, supporting equal rights for women, ending war because we value human dignity.

Oh, so we Jews need Christianity to do those things for us?

While I have no clue to your inner life, it is actually possible to come up with a humanist and even pacifist politics without the sanctions of hellfire as a threat. Oh, and you might mention where a religious society, a society that grants religion access to the powers of the state or the law has accomplished any of those things.

LBS, once you are working for God, and are looking to Him for your rewards and punishments, people, and their welfare, or even their survival, becomes something of very little matter.

You are imputing values to religion that are precisely the opposite of what they are. And where and when did religion result in any of those values, beyond what was necessary to its ideological vanity or as a cover for proselytising?

And what about us, you and me Jews? I thought our highest value, the one worth dieing for, was the "right to exist as a Jewish State"? How is that going to fit into the "religious values" of America.

Keep "religious values" the hell away from me. I know they talk real good about themselves, but the facts don't bear that out.

The highest religious value of Christianity is bringing souls to Christ? Anybody disagree? Well, I don't want a penny of my taxes put towards that goal. (It's too late, I know)

But like Lerner, you keep on positing this world of positive religious values which just ain't there. Hey, I know! Maybe we could adopt the religious values of Israel! I bet Lerner would like that!

  • No Problems.

Joe Lieberman extensively referred his Orthodox Jewish religious faith when he ran for VP in '00 and president in '04, and no one seemed to have a problem with that

No one except the voters, that is.

Not surprised by Glenn's posture today not to long ago Glenn had a Black Gay woman pen a hit piece on Obama.

    Thrasher

Mr. Thrasher, would you be so kind as to give us a link to that piece, or if you can't just give us the URL. I think I know what piece you mean but I'm not sure. You will do that, won't you please?

  • The saddest sentence

[Read the article: Barack Obama: "Committed Christian -- Called to Bring Change"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

We'll never build a huge mandate in this country only appealing to secularists.

Tell me, what religion did the New Deal refer to? What religious ideas did it come out of? Was the effort which won WW2 a religious effort? And of course our entire business and technology sector is entirely a religious creation.

The "religious mandate" in this country is a media created hysteria. The media takes the religious extremeists at face value and tells us it's true. Everybody's getting so religious and having a Christian revival? Yes according to them, but not according to the facts.

But religion seems to be growing so, all those churches? A church is tax-free! And BTW, the whole religious revival thing is lasting less than one generation, even now the leaders of the churches are talking about "the great exodus" of young people.

I could cry when I read a sentence like that. Much of America's sucess, and almost all of its civil peace, is predicated on a secular mandate.
