  • Last post, I swear it, mon General!

The other aspect of the War On Iraq which is susceptible to this analysis is the list of ponies we were supposed to acquire if we won. I never could get the connection between killing people and destroying the infrastructure and winning the love, admiration and political emulation of the Iraqis. You would think that every gun fired a bullet composed of copies of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, wrapped in a thousand dollar bill.

Unless you believe, along with Perfesser's Lewis and Pipes; "The only things the Arabs respond to is violence."

And they respond to it by loving you and wanting nothing more than to be just like you?

And to close; "sectarian violence" When you are invaded, and have neither the political cohesion or the military resources to respond in a conventional manner, you respond by making the country ungovernable. That trick is only about a couple thousand years old, I can't understand why we didn't anticipate it.

  • Amazing, and so Discouraging

As with many suicide bombers and terrorists, I think the "romance" of noble struggles, crusades and a "greater good" is infectious and beat the hell out of regular life and "domestic agendas."

    Susan Sunflower

Oh good Jesus here we go again. Susan, do you think people strap bombs to themselves because of a "romance" of noble struggles? Thank you for repeating one of the most pernicious right wing memes.

Becoming a suicide bomber is not like deciding to take up an unrenumerative but artistic career, over your rich parents objections. (Not talking about you personally)

Can you tell me where you got an idea like that? I'm not saying that the motivations or results of suicide bombers are positive, but they certainly are not trivial.

Look, why don't you look at the work of George Pape , who actually did research on why and how people become suicide bombers. That link is the first I could find on Google, there are many others, plus he has a book.

No, becoming a suicide bomber is not an "romantic" occupation.

However, it does leave you with a dramatic problem, one faced by many performers; What do you do for an encore? (small joke)

  • Sorry, link didn't take.

Is the link for a review of George Pape's work from the left point of view, there are many others, just Google his name.

    Or click mine.

Hell, if we're all gonna be killed by suicide bombers, we can at least know what it's about, instead of repeating what are virtually "crazy hippie" memes

  • It's Robert Pape

    not George.

Sorry, so tired I can't see straight nor type.

    G'Night Mother.

  • Does anyone else...

Remember that, in the run up to the War ON Iraq, the refrain was: America has the mightiest military machine in the world, unbeatable, unless we get drawn into urban house-to-house type fighting. The reasons we would be at a disadvantage in urban battles are well known, they range from our lack of those who could speak the language, to weapons and training which was unsuitable.

And then what did we do? Why, got sucked into fighting in the cities, with sectarian violence (If you can't challenge the invader directly, at least make the country ungovernable- Insurgency 101) on top of it!

These guys are gonna make war our policy? What genius!

I guess they never heard of Bre'er Rabbit!

  • Here We Go Again...

There might be other scenarios which could justify an attack on a country even if there were no direct threat to us.

    Brian Thomas

    Again with the "scenarios"!

A scenario is what you use to pitch a film or TV show.(I know, there are other, more technical definitions of "Scenario" as it relates to theatrical production. Put that in you mise-en-scene and smoke it)

It's not what you use to decide whether or not to use military force.

Anyway, let it go and let's focus on the other end of the script. The "scenarios" which purport to envision the results of military action are even whackier!

I bet if I had a data base of movie and TV plots synopses (and old WW2 newsreels), I could plug each one of these "scenarios" in and find out exactly which "Die Hard" sequel or "24" episode they are from.

I just love it when guns shoot freedom and prosperity and democracy, and planes drop "love bombs" on the helpless populations. A cakewalk, and then we waltz our way to democracy. Wait a minute, maybe we don't need a script writer, just a choreographer! Gosh, if only the Iraquis, Iranians, and Syrians knew the steps!

Israel, of course, know it takes two to Tango!

In the end, anyone voting for withdrawal is saddled with the responsibility for the aftermath. By all accounts it would be massively ugly and worse than the predicament we are sitting on currently. Not to mention bearing the label of "surrender monkey" for all time.

    Shooter242

My Goodnessgracious Shooter. What a horrible scenario!

  • Anyway, bye-bye.

I'm gotta go now. I'm headed over to Cafepress to make sure my first run of "Surrender Monkey" T-shirts and hoodies come out perfect.

$14.95 for the T-shirt and the hoodies are $39.95

But there's still hope! Why don't we just take the words "surrender" and "monkey" out of the dictionary, and threaten to invade any country, state, county, municipality, township, hamlet or neightborhood that ever uses them again.
