  • Ben Dover, are you so naive about the law . . .

that you actually think that the public is required to assume the innocence of someone who is accused of rape when they are serving in no capacity in a trial.

It seems to me that you not only want to interfere with freedom of speech but also freedom of thought. That is rather extreme.

The press is careful to use the word alleged because they do not wish to be sued, but I can assure that I can hold the opinion that someone is a rapist even if he has neither been charged or prosecuted.

For instance, I believed my friend when she said her husband had raped her even though she had no inclination to take him to court. She actually remained married to him. Just as I held the opinion that she was a fool, I held the opinion that he was a rapist.

I have long noted that people are eager to defend or rationalize or mentally minimize those behaviors with which they have the most sympathy. That is the usual course with human nature I believe.

My opinion! I am just as entitled to it as you are to yours.

  • Oh dear. For a minute I thought . . . But you are back to being Benji O'Minnow!

What empirical evidence do you have about the rape case under discussion?

It is my opinion that these young men (at least some of them) are most probably rapists.

Is it your opinion that they are not? Please tell us why or why not. Are you even capable of looking dispassionately at the case at hand or are you too eager to sympathize with those poor young college guys?

  • "I'd like to see her campaign show some real fire"

[Read the article: Will the real Hillary please stand up?]

And we should be really glad of that.

Remember, Slackie Onassis, that it is very early days yet. Most people are probably not paying that much attention. However, those who are, are looking for missteps. This campaign has started so early and so much money (an obscene amount) is involved, that we are being subjected to campaigning about five months in advance of where it used to be.

This is a campaign for marathoners. Sprinters will fade. Please remember the Dean Scream. How much fire do you want to see? A slow banked fire builds. An overheated fire flares and dies.

I think of myself as a fairly average peron. When I am at Salon, I sometimes feel guilty that I am not pursuing other goals. If most people are even less informed than I dramatic stuff only will catch their eyes. If it is bad dramatic stuff, the party will suffer and not just the candidate who stumbles.

It is not just Hillary who is playing it fairly safe.

Most people probably don't want to think about this, but politically the war is still a hot potato -- all apologies to Mr. Spud.

Slackie, have you ever walked into a store in October to be confronted with Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas all at once. What was your feeling? Manipulated? Bombarded?

Did you ever feel by the time December rolls around, that you just did not want to see another Christmas candle? Too much fire too early could result in voter confusion and apathy.

  • My position is that rape probably occurred in this instance.

I never noticed that you are skilled in logic and reason. Pardon me!

All you have said about the current case that has any substance at all is that the Attorney General could look into it. I didn't hear you, in the interests of justice, urging the Attorney General to look into it. I didn't hear you addressing any of the statements of the witnesses.

Do you think there is some vast anti-rapist conspriacy to make up witness statements against those poor, poor, possible rapists?

  • Benji, you have been blowing smokescreen since almost the start of this thread.

Everything you have said here is to distract from the case that is actually the subject of this thread. You have brought in one extraneous issue after another.

Of course, that is your right. But I am calling you on this behavior: What do you have to say about the actual case at hand?

  • Alex O'Neal, I hope you can stand another compliment.

I too was impressed by your letter. Often it seems difficult to hit the right note with Cary's LWs. All too easily we fall into harsh judgments. Your letter shows a unique balance of compassion and good judgement.

About grad school. Sigh. Been there and done that, although I did not get the terminal degree. It is truly a wonder I don't have flashbacks.

    Hang in there.

I am not familiar with the term Ben Dover. Why don't you explain in detail.

Does this have something to do with the case at hand, upon which you seem unable to comment?

  • Furthermore, I have never made any penis references.

    To what are you referring?

  • Anonymous, since you are chiming in . . .

and perhaps here to run interference for poor Benji, maybe you can say whether or not you think that rape may have occurred in the current case?

It is odd that you guys (assume guys) are so eager to discuss the Duke case and not the case at hand.

Do you hope to prevent Broadsheet from ever discussing the subject of rape?

BTW, do you know what that tea thingy Benji was referring to earlier is? I assume you guys could enlighten me, since you seem to have a coordinated effort here.

  • Loula,

[Read the article: It has been 10 months and he still won't say "I love you"]

    I think you underestimate dogs.

  • "No but you can pleasure me."

    See above ^^^^^

That is quoting you Anonymous. And you implied that you're female and I don't want to pleasure you.

Nothing against lesbians. It's just that I am not.

You still don't want to address the issue, do you? You and Benji prefer to focus on me.

But, Anonymous, it's not all about me. It's all about rape and rapists and this particular case, in which you want to invalidate everyone else's opinion by referencing the Duke case.

    That is soooo lame.

And isn't it odd that there are so many people in this thread who want to attack feminists and feminism, as if women could not be opposed to rape unless they are feminists. Go interview some religious fundamentalist women. I bet they are opposed to rape as well.

Anonymous, are you opposed to rape?
