Market this differently and you have a winner.

The purpose of Memorial Day is to honor the fallen. It is Bush who made it into a big patriotic thing to remember 9-11 and support the current war in Iraq.

Edwards is on to something but he has the wrong approach. Memorial Day is a Monday preceded by a Sunday. What Edwards should do is remind us that Memorial Day is to honor the fallen and he should be very visible doing that. However, he should use the day before -- Sunday -- to call for a National Day of Hope and Prayers for Peace. It is on Sunday that he should emphasize the damage that the war is doing to our soldiers currently serving in Iraq.

Verelse,

I think we are in tune here.

The next AG can do a good job on child predators too.

Gonzales must resign. Every thing the Dems do right now should be focused upon getting him to resign. I believe that this is actually more important than the war. I believe Gonzales may be protecting the President from further investigation into impeachable offenses.

Think we should impreach Bush?

Think how much damage he can still do to The Constitution in his remaining time.

Brian Neary, about all that "surface thinking":

Did you miss the point that the doctors tried to fix something that neither the patient or his family thought was a problem in the first place?

Did you miss the part that his serious downhill slide began with a simple antidepressant?

Did you miss the part about neuroleptic malignant syndrome? You can't have narcoleptic maglignant syndrome without narcoleptics, can you?

Thanks for the good analysis Joan Walsh.

Among my daughter's friends, twenty-somethings, the libertarian-leaning Paul is quite popular and the war is extremely unpopular.

Why is this? The "War" is going so badly and the extended tours and second and third tours of our troops make it clear that the "War" cannot go on much longer without some fresh blood. So far, the focus of the left has been on ending the "War" but what does that really mean? Chances are it means that the "War" will continue as occupation on another level.

We are probably one more Mideast crisis away from the reactivation of the draft.

People of my daughter's generation who support Paul like his libertarian stance on free choice social issues. This is a generation which does not see marijuana or even X as utter evil. Ever been to a rave?

One other thing: They also don't want to be the fresh blood for the war engine.

I bet if you analyse where much of Paul's support is coming from you will find that much of it comes from very tech saavy young people.

MarkG,

No kidding! It's like trying to get a true nonsmoking room.

I hope no one falls for the gimmick.

To Brian Neary:

I am trying to understand the meaning of the following statement by you in your reply to me:

"Take a deep breath, put your feet up, have yourself a non-alcoholic beverage (‘cause alcohol’s a drug too, you know) and then consider signing up for Pop Warner. I think it’s the appropriate league under the circumstances."

I don't know who Pop Warner is. Do tell me please.

And was your comment about about alcohol being a drug you're way of telling me that you believe that I am drunk? Please do elaborate.

To DonaQuixote:

Thank you for providing more information that you have gleaned through your experience.

In the recent past, I worked as a government contractor in vocational rehabilitation. It was a strange experience because I actually returned to the same PSR where I had felt almost imprisoned and helped people with mental health problems find jobs or obtain funding for self-employment. The staff was not very accepting of me. I don't know if it was because I had been there as a consumer or because I worked for a completely separate program.

Almost all the people I attempted to help had been abandoned by their families. Some came from very abusive families. Because I had experienced both of those circumstances, I was acutely aware of how alone many of them felt. I would say family support is the single most important factor in recovery.

Mostly, good and sincere families have a very positive influence. Occasionally they are a detriment. Families spend so much time making certain that their loved ones are medication compliant that they get upset if it turns out that the best chance for higher functioning is to reduce the dosage slightly. Naturally they are afraid the consumer will decomp.

I don't know about you, but I am a real believer in the recovery movement. I believe you used the word empowerment. That is a favorite word of mine. No one gets well (if wellness is possible) without making decisions.

I am not sure everyone in this thread understands how many people get to the point where they cannot make decisions or in anyway advocate for themselves. Maybe next time someone sees one of those stinky, homeless people they will get a clue as to how people become homeless and hopeless in the first place.

Bauer's story illustrates how families can literally save their loved ones' lives. Sadly, it also illustrates that the power of Google can be a lifeline when doctors will not listen. Such should not have to be the case.
