Obama and his supporters have nothing to do with the rules of the Democratic Party. If you want to blame him, that's your business, but it doesn't make sense to me. Why don't you blame the Democratic Party?
Changing the rules half way into the game seems unfair, regardless of who won, or how many people voted. Florida has been robbed--but Obama and his supporters are not the thieves who robbed you.
I have felt a lump in my throat all day after hearing that John was dropping out of the race. I remember about a year ago and I was driving in my car and heard Edwards speaking passionately about poverty and what we could do to change it and I had to pull my car over and listen to the rest of the speech before I went home. I had tears in my eyes, and partly it was because of my own cynicism when it comes to poverty and how ugly America has become for poor people. I thought "I wish that I were young enough to believe that he can make a difference."
The second thing I will hold on to during Edwards bid was when he took me completely by surprise during the Presidential debate in New Hampshire, I think it was, when he said to Hillary, "see, that's what happens when you challenge the forces of the status quo. They attack. Hillary you didn't have these criticisms of Obama back in Iowa when you were ahead..." I leaped up out of my chair and was jumping up and down. I watched her face as he called her a "force for the status quo," and I thought, I wonder if that's your opportunity for a VP slot gone, Mr. Edwards, but it changed my view of him. I thought, he is a force for change.
People speak about Obama being the choice for idealists, but realistically, Edwards ran the most idealistic campaign. He talked to and for the people who don't usually show up at voting booths. I'm pre mourning the possible death of Obama's campaign as well. Two candidates for changing the Washington status quo. I see in the kerfuffle over Florida the writing on the wall. I hear that Clinton has assured the Democratic Party of Florida that she will be the nominee, and they will be seated at the event.
I want to believe that candidates can run clean campaigns for poor people, and to bring hope to the weakest members of society, but the loss of John's campaign is a punch in the stomach for that theory. Negative headlines are still headlines. So I say kaddish for the campaign in 2008 of this good man, and I prepare kaddish for the campaign of another one. And I wait to see what will happen.
