Original article: The race vs. gender war

Has anyone critiqued the originator of this debate: FOX news?

I keep looking, and no one, including Clinton or Obama talks about Fox news interviewing Clinton to begin with. Clinton went on with Tim Russert about how Obama supporters were distorting her message--(which as an Obama supporter, I found bizarre since I had nothing to do with her comments or with the way they were framed in the media)....why don't the candidates take a second look at the network where it all started?

I mean yesterday I heard on the news that John McCain thinks that the American people will not have a problem with occupying Iraq for the next 50-100 years (I'm not kidding--look it up) and today I read that sweet little Huckabee wants to amend the constitution to be more pleasing to Jesus. The whole campaign has gotten way off message with fairy tales and Clinton bashing and Obamaphobia. Have Clinton supporters forgotten that even if she wins this election, Obama may be her running mate? Or he may--if he continues to create the kind of grassroots following he's already started-- grow into the party candidate in the near future? This bashing of Obama has bothered me probably as much as the bashing of Clinton has bothered her supporters.

It's frustrating. Kamiya, your article struck several chords with me. I hadn't thought of it the way you frame it about people being afraid to express racism in America, and maybe that's why there was such a ferocious response to Obama (who I still contend never brought the subject up on his own).

I hope that voters can focus on the real issues at hand (100 years in Iraq, Corporate Oligarchy and a Jesus-focused constitution). For me it brought it all into focus: as much as Clinton's campaign so far hasn't "inspired" me to cheer for her, I still whole-heartedly cheer for the policies she brings to the table if that's what my vote boils down to. Democrats need to pull together. The flipside is hardly tolerable, if you think about it.

taking the bait

I'm glad that though the candidates are not taking questions on race or gender anymore, that salon readers can still take the bait.

So fitting my mouth around that hook: I just wanted to say that I have thought over the past day or two that (not to be paranoid about the right wing news network) but did anyone notice it was Fox who framed the questions that Clinton awkwardly answered last week? It just strikes me that a clever reporter can get even a professional to trip over their tongue.

And on another note: has anyone else heard that McCain thinks the American people will be fine with another 50-100 years occupying Iraq? I heard it on NPR. And today I read that Huckabee thinks the constitution should be amended to be more pleasing to Jesus? Merciful Jesus, I hope Democrats get smart about their squabbles and vote for the best candidate regardless of labels and packaging.

Beautiful Señorita

I don't hate Hillary Clinton, but I found it creepily deceptive that she argued Obama hadn't ever tried to end the war in Iraq when he did propose to cap troop levels and bring all combat troops home by 2008.

In this new love-fest between Obama supporters and Clinton supporters, it's important to stick to the truth. My respect for Clinton's performance was damaged by her omission of this one, very important fact which contradicted her entire thesis. (That Obama's commitment to ending the war in Iraq is nothing but a fairy tale). Even if Clinton wins she has damaged her reputation in the mind of this voter. I will vote for her policies alone, not for the side of her personality that I saw on Sunday. She reminded me of Reece Witherspoon in the movie Election. Yes, she may win. But is she just going to bring the same dishonest politics to the white house under a different flag? I always thought ambition was appealing in a woman. But that kind of ambition and slander of an opponent in order to win didn't win my admiration. It made me sad.

Beautiful Señorita

point taken. I have more time to be patient. Thank-you for responding.

And thrasher, thank-you. I like your posts where you express your feelings about Obama too. Don't worry. I think sooner or later his time will come. He's an extraordinary person, and hopefully he will stay this way.
