The public are against gay marraige but support domestic partnership. So of course the community picked another fight they couldn't win. The queer community carry a ton of baggage, and their stratgy is set by the victim complex crowd, not to mention the self righteous set who live for pointing out how unfair everyone is. They're also hopelessly naive and confuse politicians with saints. A smooth operator like Obama is not going to waste capital on people who don't notice the most obvious political realities.

So now, instead of a quick and easy victory on domestic partnership, they can get all frothy over how terrible Obama is, and waste a few more years.

And it should be shouted in the face of every fundamentalist. They'd make strong allies if they were confronted with biblical demands in a way they can't ignore. It's also the reason Europe has healthcare. Europeans internalized biblical values years ago, while American fundys have been running a massive con. Ignoring the basics of scripture is their specialty, so a confrontation would have to be very forcefull.
