@Retired Military Patriot
[Read the article: Enforcing the community's foreign policy orthodoxy]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I have no idea what is a legitimate threat, and what is not. Fortunately for us, I'm nowhere near the levers of power.
Unfortunately, the legitimacy of a threat probably follows the "I know it when I see it" maxim. Iraq didn't look like it to me, but it did to some other people I respect.
For what it's worth, I agree with you. We should be spending more time looking for ways to foster peace, than respond to threats. And it's odd that we don't, because it's easier to know when you have peace than when you have a threat.

@Derbig Mooser
[Read the article: Enforcing the community's foreign policy orthodoxy]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Did you read anything else I said, or fixate on one comment, take it out of context, and attack?
Well, sorry. You're the jackass, here. Tom Hanks would be much better in that role.

@Derbig Mooser
[Read the article: Enforcing the community's foreign policy orthodoxy]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Seriously, how well does the intellectual superiority thing work out for you? So, you don't like a point I made, so I must be an idiot.
And while dumb movies may be about scenarios, so is foreign policy. I was pointing out one possible scenario of this Iraq fiasco. Before the war started, it was probably the most unlikely one, but it was a possibility. As was him having nothing, and us looking like imperialistic idiots for invading.
Or do you live in a world without alternate possibilities? Where an issue is either black or white? Where there is only one possible outcome, and it's the one that you said would happen all along? (Why, I think you might have some things in common with our leadership!)
If so, I commend you. In your honor, I'm going to sit down to a nice subtitled, independent movie tonight, perhaps with a snifter of fine cognac. After it's over, I'll discuss the artistic implications, both of the artists responsible, and my interpretation of their work. Then tomorrow at work, I'll tell all my coworkers about it, using vocabulary that most of them don't know so that there's no doubt left as to what an insufferable, elitist prick I am.

Question for Glenn
[Read the article: Why is the Democratic Congress so unpopular?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]How many times do you want the Democrats in the Senate to put this up for a floor vote, only to lose because the Republicans are too scared to go against Bush? You're right that they have a solid House majority, and have used that to their advantage. But they effectively have no advantage in the Senate. Committee chairmanships mean little in the Senate, given that anyone can offer any amendment at any time.
The balance in the Senate right now is 49 Republicans, 48 Democrats (Tim Johnson is still not in attendance), 1 independent that votes with the Democrats and 1 independent that votes with the Republicans on the war.
How many times should they bring floor votes that they know they are going to lose and give the media fodder for calling them losers? They can't stop this damn war until 10 Republicans in the Senate join them. They may need to do a better job of marketing that point, but that's the reality.
Stop giving in to the media talking points, and place the blame squarely where it belongs: on moderate Republicans in the Senate.

Jimmy Rollins
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I think you hit a key point there. We think of people as great fielders when they make the spectacular plays.
My case in point on that is Jimmy Rollins. Rollins rarely makes highlight reel plays, mostly because he doesn't have to. He gets to everything. He makes nasty short hops look routine, and rarely has to dive simply because he reads the ball so well off the bat, that he gets there in time. He never throws a ball away.
The biggest compliment I can give him is that if Rollins doesn't make the play, no other shortstop would have either.
He hasn't won a gold glove yet, and probably won't. That will probably switch from Vizquel right over to Reyes, who makes spectacular plays. But Rollins is the best infielder I've ever seen, and I saw plenty of Mike Schmidt games back in the day.

Shocker, Greenwald attacks Democrats again
[Read the article: The Democrats' responsibility in the wake of Gonzales' resignation]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Before anything has even happened, Greenwald is attacking the Democrats over what he thinks it's possible they might do. Bush will make a recess appointment, and Greenwald will blame the Democrats, then criticize the main stream media for blaming the Democrats.
And the circular firing squad loads up and starts firing.

Yeah!
[Read the article: What Larry Craig admitted]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Real Republicans, who deserve to keep their jobs, solicit high-class female prostitutes, not random men in restrooms.

How?
[Read the article: The president's escalating war rhetoric on Iran]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I don't think the American people would be supportive another war, even if it were a good idea. Americans are sick and tired of war, and I can't see them abiding a Congress or President that starts another one when the other two we're currently fighting are still not won.
Check out public approval of the war in Afghanistan. Although the vast majority of the public thinks that war was justified, they're tiring of it too and are beginning to want a pull out there as well.
The military doesn't have the means to fight another war. Bush would have two options for fighting Iran right now: a draft, or nuclear weapons. I can't see him getting a military draft through Congress, and the American people wouldn't stand for it. And if he used nuclear weapons on Iran, he would be viewed as one of the worst monsters in history. Bush may be delusional, but good lord, let's hope he's not so delusional that he thinks anyone, anywhere at anytime would vindicate him for nuking a sovereign state.
