Sarah Palin, an Armageddon and Rupture driven fundamentalist and extremist who as VP would have great odds of becoming President if McCain is elected, due to McCain's age and melanoma issues, said something that should chill the blood of every person on this planet, including small town America. She said that Georgia should join NATO, so next time it's involved in a military conflict with Russia, the US will be forced to attack Russia.

I wonder if small town America is aware that Russia isn't Iraq. It has a huge military and nearly 30,000 nuclear weapons, many of whom still targeted at US cities. How exactly would a conventional or nuclear confrontation with Russia improve the lives of rural, small town Americans and who will the burden of such a catastrophe fall on?

If you are in the military, you hope the generals at the top know much more about warfare and military strategy than you do. If you need surgery, you hope the surgeon knows much more about surgery than you do. when you are a plane passenger, you hope the pilot is better at flying a plane than you are.

At least half of the US population is offended when the presidential candidate, incidentally always the Democratic nominee, is more educated, more sophisticated and smarter than they are. You keep hearing from "Red" Americans that Obama is "too smart, went to those elitist colleges and thinks he's better than us".

What profound low self esteem makes half of the country expect their president not to be smarter than they are ? It's mind boggling.

Years ago I got in my car in my car and drove through small town America, the South, Midwest and south West. Having grown up in the cosmopolitan progressive San Francisco bay area, I felt I really needed to understand that part of the country. I met many kind and decent people. my overriding expression though is how much the ignorance, isolation, xenophobia and yes, deep rooted racism, contribute to what we know as small town America. So many of the people I met had never even left the county they were born in, let alone the state. Owning a passport and travel abroad were basically incomprehensible concepts. Very few could even point in the direction of the Atlantic or Pacific oceans, they had no idea and never saw an ocean. Naming even one world leader was indeed a foreign concept, except they hated the "damn communists" because they wanted to "invade America". When discussing Jews, I'd be often asked about the horns. Armageddon, the Anti-Christ, Jews controlling the world, the communists in Washington who want to take away their guns, all that stuff was discussed and brought up often, and they were dead serious. I remember one guy in Oklahoma saying to me :"I'm not a racist, but I hate n****s who go to college because it makes 'em think they are better that us white folk".

Not everybody in small town America is like that, and you hope that in the 30 plus years that passed since that trip, things have improved. However, the euphoria with which an ignorant redneck crazy like Palin has been greeted in small town America makes me very pessimistic and extremely concerned about the future of this nation. We seem to be regressing toward the dark ages.

I don't know if it's the inbreeding or the insane brand of Christianity that she and many of her fans share, but to those damb-fucks, the necessary qualification for being on the presidential ticket are straight forward:be white, be as ignorant and clueless as possible, deny evolution and climate change and one of your main hobbies should be murdering animals.

I hate conspiracy theories which are the domain of the Sarah Palin crowd, but when you combine that with the facilitation by Bush/Cheney of the hasty retreat of the Bin Laden family back to Saudi Arabia on 9/12/01, their chartered plane was the only one allowed to take off that week, the refusal by the white house to allow FBI agents to interview them in the US or Saudi Arabia, and the obvious lack of real interest in capturing him by the Bush regime, it makes you wonder. As time goes by, the doubts about who actually masterminded the 9/11 attacks, even if they were physically committed by Bin Laden's people increase. Bush/Cheney and the neocons were more than morally capable of complicity in those attacks in order to achieve their grand scheme of an omnipotent American empire.
