A journey into the right wing mind, or the dark side of the moon

I asked my right wing acquaintance(rather, a former client)how he reconciled being a rabid supporter of Clinton's impeachment with his horror at any talk about a Bush or Cheney impeachment. His explanation is something like this:the voters have elected Bush&Cheney, and the politicians shouldn't be allowed to reverse the voters choice. When I asked him why this principle didn't apply to the Clinton impeachment, the reply was as follows:Clinton received less than 50 percent of the popular vote, therefore he wasn't a legitimate president. In addition, Clinton had murdered Vince Foster and hated the USA, unlike the patriotic Bush&Cheney, therefore impeachment was kosher vis-a-vis Clinton, but a national betrayal if attempted against Bush&Cheney.

I just need to mention that this person isn't some Idaho illiterate militia lunatic, but a highly educated person with graduate degrees from USC.

Looking ahead

Bush has probably got a lot of good years left in him which could well yet be spent at a nice comfy prison in Danbury or perhaps The Hague if his history is ever allowed to catch up to him. And something tells me that President Hillary will not be in much of a pardoning mood. Perhaps he could pray to Karla Faye Tucker to put in a good word with Jesus for him. Oh, wait... Never mind. He will certainly grow more hated over time, as the bills for his presidency increasingly come due, and no amount of Camelot or Nancyalot post-hoc repackaging will ever be able to paste a shine on this stinking turd of a presidency. All this considered, wouldn't it have been better to just remain down in Texas, growing ever richer mooching off Daddy's connections and slurping PiƱas by the pool, flipping through 1970s editions of Playboy, rolled-up hundred dollar bill hanging out of his nose?

Borrowing from the Nazis

If you wonder about the source of the incredibly insane and absurd neoconservative mantra:"Islamic terror represents an existential threat to the US", look no further than the Nazi mantra:"The Jew represents an existential threat to Germany". They borrowed every single word from Nazi propaganda and changed only the source of the "existential threat". And the neocon ranks are crawling with bonafide psychopaths, just like the Nazi leadership.

The surge that will result in accelerated American casualties

In reality, the improvement in the US position in Anbar has nothing to do with the surge and the deployment of 30,000 extra American troops. The change in the military situation in the province is a result of a split in the Sunni guerrilla movement between an al-Qa'ida umbrella organization called the Islamic State of Iraq and the rest of the Sunni guerrillas.

The Islamic State of Iraq created widespread anger among the Sunni community by killing anybody connected with the government, such as garbage collectors or lowly employees of ministries. They were also seeking to draft one young man from each Sunni family into their forces.

Bizarrely, the US is now backing and arming Sunni tribal militias who do not answer to the Iraqi government, while pressing Mr Maliki to clamp down on the Shia militias, notably the anti-American Mehdi Army led by Muqtada al-Sadr.

President Bush may be giving a hostage to fortune by claiming a major success in Anbar because, since the improvement in the military situation had little to do with the US, the Sunni guerrillas could, and almost certainly will, compose their differences and resume the offensive.

The Sunnies as friends

The administration has been seeking to give the impression that the US military may at last be turning the corner in Iraq, though Iraqi politicians in Baghdad believe very little has changed on the ground.

One sign that Iraqis themselves believe security in the country is getting worse is that the number of Iraqis fleeing their homes in fear of their lives has risen from 50,000 a month to 60,000 a month according to the UN High Commission for Refugees. Some 4.2 million Iraqis are now refugees inside and outside the country. 1800 Iraqis were killed during the month of August.
