K. Little - Re the Pink Ghetto

Have you checked out Broadsheet lately ?

My reference to the Pink Ghetto is sarcasm - I loath Broadsheet and all it implies, the separatation out of "womens news" from the main site, relegating them to second class importance, the patronising "Pink & Cheeky (rather snarky)" girly giggle approach, the fact that men are invite only - as if womens issues aren't mens issues as well (and vica versa).

Patricia - thanks for the info

I'm not really up on Californian politics but I had noticed the relentless anti arnold theme on Salon and wondered if it was justfied. Arnie was upsetting a lot of applecarts and vested interests which seemed to me to be a good thing at the time.

If there's one thing thats killing dems in the US at the moment its complacency and inflexibility.

Yeah cute answer - I'm involved in the film industry, nor do I have the contacts etc neccessary to battle the entrenched beliefs that children are better off without men etc. I have a family to support and other demanding interests (Animal rescue to be exact).

The sore point is more this automatic assumption that women are natural mothers who are always best for their children. After having watched my brother battle the legal and social system for 8 years to rescue his son from his druggie mother who physically and emotionally abused him I'm rather cynical in that regard.

And its people like the respondents here that support that system, they ignore and brush other anything but the most egregious abuses by mothers and even then excuse as their response to a oppressive society.

There is a shit load of abuse performed by mothers on their kids which is just never acknowledged, far easier to blame the fathers.

Look at this program - reuniting kids with their abusive druggie mothers, think it would fly if it were the fathers ?

Like the others said

That was fascinating, a look into a part of acting the non-actors amongst don't know about.

Easy & informative reading as well - good luck with the writing career, it looks good.

Guilt ?

Hey its broadsheet - whatever the topic it has to be shoehorned into patriacrhial oppression of the women victim.

Pot ... Kettle .. Black ...

But now the station is trying to maintain the cheese factor while adding new programming to attract younger viewers

I mean really - salon is commenting on a cheesy makeover to attract younger viewers in Broadsheet ! ROTFL!

However this goes beyond stupid:

most fiction readers are women, after all

I'm gobsmacked - thats a new level of drivel even for broadsheet. You need to return in your writer credentials to the cereal box.

200 pairs of Shoes ?

Plus all the other stuff mentioned - who spends that sort of money on a journo's salary ?

Either she's way overpaid or more likely she's relying on Daddy or Hubby to dig her out of a financial pit.

Need better writing

Liek the others have said - this could have been a better article if the writer could like actually write ! Honestly this is D- material, its shameful seeing it in a major mag.

"Blah blah blah", What was the editor thinking ?

Even just as fluff it could have been good, though a serious article addressing excessive consumption would have been better.

Failed on all levels.

I thought "yeah, sure, like that will keep the men from invading this space..."

If you want womens only places there's plenty of them on the web, I'm sure you could sound off to a sympathetic audience on Oxygen.

But the Salon I love is for *everyone*, no exclusive little cubbyholes.

And fortunately, still has a sense of humour.

So expect plenty of editorial input from our male colleagues, especially Farhad Manjoo

and irony

It gives one hope

I am not a american, but have been increasingly dismayed by the apparent suicide of the USA. Its articles like this which give one hope for the future of the USA.

It should have been the front page lead.

Not more bloody princesses

Having had to deal with princesses on a daily basis I'd really appreciate a line of "Not a princess" teeshirts

Pets can matter just as much as kids any time

Not just when you're isolated and abused.

People love their pets - no need to defend them staying for their pets as opposed for some hypothetical child. In theory at least the child has more protection under law.

Congradulations - you are now offically a hack. Feel free to go back to the bottle, maybe you'll rediscover that creativity and insight there.

kOOTAGTR - You're right, maybe she was a victim of incest

Or maybe evil aliens are beaming mindcontrol rays into her head, or maybe magic pixies will fly out of my ass.

But one thing is sure - that was a mind bogglingly useless piece of speculation from you. Glad to see you feel happy slandering whatever relative you feel buggered her, is this your answer for whatever problems people exhibit ? "Daddy played with their pee pees!"

Refreshing interesting article - thanks

One of the things I've always liked about salon is its refreshing open minded looks at sexuality, erotica/media issues etc. Its best when they're not coming from a position, I always react badly to cant/ideology.

These were good, thanks.

Of course its usually a man

Thy're usually the ones busting their jobs supporting them both by working. But you'd never catch Broadsheet saying *that*

Yeyah yeah, the jews suffered more than anyone else, we can never discuss torture, genocide, oppression etc without referencing the holocaust (the Jewish one) that is. And please remember Israel has a copyright on the phrase "Holocaust". You can never refer to to anything else as a holocoust, e.g. "The Armenian Holocaust". And god forbid you reference palestinians in anyway except as terrorists.

Concetration camps - hmmm lets not forget the russian camps now - far more russians died in them than jews in WW2 now.
