Nothing quite like ...

... the self-righteousness of those whose bodies and psyches have always been healthy.

Original article: "Cloverfield"

"Cloverfield" takes the trauma of 9/11 and turns it into just another random spectacle

Well duh - 9/11 (or 11/9 in the civilised world) is just another random spectacle.

Self absorbed Americans. Way to many of them. Never even considered that Cloverfield was related to 9/11 until yet again some critic had to make it all about their own obessions all over again.

@you can't beat a bloodied, disembodied penis for grim laughs

Oh I dunno, bloodied, eviscerated vagina's are pretty funny - if that's the way your mind works. Obviously Stephanie's does.

I wish someone had hammered that into my head in my youth. And the LW seems a very well balanced intelligent young women, I'm sure she'll take it onboard.

@Mister Thompson - good review

Thank you,

@mantonat -"a severed member is funny, in exactly the way a toothed vagina is funny."

Ummmm lemme see ... bloody amputation of a persons sex is the same as ...

Nope, not seeing it.

Nice, looks interesting

Petrol + Battery + Capacitor. Its a Hybrid hybrid :)

One thing the article only touches on - what happens if electric cars (hybrid or otherwise) take off and we suddenly have multitudes of households charging their cars overnight? the strain on the grid will be huge, in fact I doubt the capacity is currently there (pun not intended).

Countries/States need to start planning for increased grid capacity now, and remember - most of this extra load will be at night, not good for solar. IMHO I don't see any green alternatives for producing the immense amounts of base power needed other than nuclear, but that can be managed safely.

Original article: Egypt's Gaza nightmare

Cairo now has to solve the humanitarian problem that we have been dealing with until now," said an Israeli official.

Hah hah hah hah hah hah ! I never realised Israeli's could be so funny.

Original article: Egypt's Gaza nightmare

@They started out as Egyptians - revisionist bullshit

But what more would you expect from Nulla Sallas, a reality denying neocon to his core. The Palestinians have had continuous residence in what now constitutes Palestine/Israel for millennia, far longer than the Jews currently occupying the area.

Also convenient for him to ignore that the majority of Jews in Israel (Ashkenazi) aren't even Semites and hence don't even have the tenuous claim of their ancestors having resided in Israel two millennia ago.

Original article: Egypt's Gaza nightmare

@but it didn't exactly go down that way when israel pulled out of the Strip.

Probably because Israel closed all borders and blocked relief convoy's from entering. This is Israel's idea of a Palestinian state.

List the Palestinian Civilian casualties Nulls

Put of course you'd need a *lot* more space wouldn't you, approx four times as much space. Even when excluding rock throwing children "terrorists" and all the uncounted people who have died from lack of clean water, food and power.

What the hell - its the Palestinians fault for putting themselves in front of tank shells and missiles. Yet one more way they can traumatise those brave innocent Israeli soldiers in their fighter jets and merka tanks.

Don't worry Nulls - the pally's are just "Beasts on legs" aren't they, as one of your revered leaders said.

@misaac - learn some history

Bantusians are a Apartheid era South African term referring to separate areas set aside for blacks with no connections between them and all access/resources controlled by the whites. Exactly what Israel is doing to Palestine.

Note that Israel was very friendly with Apartheid South Africa and one of the few nations in the world to ignore the sanctions against them. Kindred spirits and all that.

@Labaki gets extra credit for making a film in an Arab country that casually depicts friendship between Muslims and Christians

Would should that be so odd? muslim/christian relationships are pretty good in Lebanon, better than they are in the USA.

Or is this more of the "Oooo scary brown arab terrorists hate whites and christians" meme.

Original article: Aboriginal STDs

Agree with most of the other posters

The article is ignorant, misinformed and racist. Attempts to make parallels between Australian Aboriginal communities and groups in the USA are laughably ridiculous - a classic case of "Ugly Americanism".

As stated by others the problems are largely due to institutionalised racism, neglect, lack of funding and the break down of traditional Aboriginal social structures - much of that due to deliberate government policy. However a complete lack of leadership within the Aboriginal community has not helped either.

And you oddly overlook one of the major factors in the prevalence of STD's, particularly in Aboriginal children - the appalling rate of child abuse in northern Aboriginal communities.

Overall - one of the more shallow, vapid BS articles I've seen yet, and that's saying a lot. And what is this doing in BS in the first place? this is not a woman only problem, its a tragedy for Aboriginal women, men and children.

Original article: Aboriginal STDs

What might need to be done

Addressing the chronic problems of abuse, drugs and alcoholism is probably a prerequisite of any successful std campaign. The STD problem is a symptom of those.

As to how to do that, a start might be sidelining the (male) tribal elders when it comes to programs and resources. They have problems with corruption and hidebound, conservative thinking. I've heard suggestions that power and government resources be distributed via the female elders only, it sounds plausible to me.

@"If Palestinians now are lobbing missiles over the border and killing civilians as they do"

The utter blindness of Israeli apologists never fails to amaze me. This is a large part of want hinders peace in Palestine.

Sunday, February 10, 2008 10:27 PM

@Anonymous, you illustrate the blindness I refer to perfectly

I was of course not refering to the largely ineffective quassam's a few palestinian's launch into Isreal.

Rather, the highly effective and murderous missles launched into palestinian neighbourhoods, and of course the shells, the bullets, the tnaks, the thugs in uniforms etc.

But to anonymous, those are all legit, quite justified and not to be thought about.

She's not a girl

She's 21 - an adult, she's not a child or prepubescent, she's an adult legally and ethically, able to make her own choices. Finding her attractive is not akin to pedophilia or a power play as some letter writers seem to think.

What is it with BS and it tendency to infantalise the women it finds distasteful.
