The circle is complete

The neocons have adopted Israel's tactics.

And we intend to stay here for as long as we like, in the vast 'enduring bases' we are building on your land. Now if you don't accept this, if you keep shooting at us and trying to make us leave, then we will go on bombing your families in their homes, we will go on killing your women and children, until you stop."

America is Israel. Israel is America.

Original article: Who needs a Prius anyway?

I'm with Rebecca

The Prius is all image, no substance.

Me, I drive a 1985 Toyota Corolla - its mileage is better than most modern cars, *especially* the SUV's. Bonus - It's so simple and basic I can maintain it myself.

No substance ..

Yeah, I probably did overstate the case there ... the Prius is a good car if you can afford it - 40mpg is not to be sneezed at. I was reacting more to the exaggerated claims for it (60mpg) and the impression people form that there's nothing better.

Good point re recycling cars - buying a new car is a huge hit on the environment compared to keeping a old one running for a bit longer.

I loves my Toyota Corella - they're a classic, very basic and simple and just keep going and going, the antithesis of planned obsolesce. I doubt anything similar can be brought today from the major car makers.

Since when is $22,000 expensive?

Since for a lot of people - not everyone makes enough money to buy new cars. You're way out of touch.

re : prius envy

I can tell you from first-hand experience that if you're willing to drive with some moderation, intelligence, and heavy use of cruise-control on the freeway (in other words, letting the computer find the most efficient way to accellerate and decellerate the car), you can get close to 60 mpg in average driving

Depends on your circumstances - if your commute consists solely on getting around town and the suburbs in traffic then most of your time will be spent stopping/starting and mpg will be much lower no matter how careful you are.

The lesson being I guess, buy a car to match your commute rather than its "green" credentials.

notre druide - don't be so comfortable with your social conscience

I recycled my car - you didn't. That puts me way ahead of you in the environmental impact of our respective purchases.

To be fair

I don't think Rebecca is sneering at Kucinich - she's sneering at herself, and democratic voters. For not voting their core values - and she's right.

What does this have to do with broadsheet?

Its not specific to women, its not pink, its not sassy. Why would BS readers what to bother their chic pink heads with it?

Tuesday, November 20, 2007 10:30 PM

@ Panask

I suggest you read BS's opening statement (http://www.salon.com/mwt/broadsheet/2005/10/24/broadsheet/index.html).

... Introducing Salon's cheeky new women's blog

... Our aim is to cast a spotlight on news that puts women in the center

And of course the logo and colour theme for BS.

Go

prepare yourself and then in front of the camera ask all those questions and demand answers. Show anger show tears - let your passion grind that pustulant little boil into the putrid muck he sprung from.

@There's no point in impeaching Bush if we're just going to get Cheney

Dudes - you *already* have Cheney, do you really think the chimp in charge blows a fart without Cheney's approval?

Enough of this already, impeach Bush, impeach Cheney, then execute them.

The IR laws certainly had a lot to do with it

But Global warming did as well - at least here in queensland. We've been facing the hard end of a very serious drought for some time (years) now and water conservation is a big issue.

The fact that Howard was a complete climate change denier untill just before the elections did not go down well.

Saturday, November 24, 2007 08:35 PM

@crankynick - local level climate change

I imagine that climate change was viewed mostly as a state issue, probably specific to queensland rather than a major federal issue - though it should be.

Original article: Busting out

What are peoples problems with this article?

Its a frank sensitive non-whiny article about a problem for many women which resolves in a positive manner. I don't get why people are so hostile about it - let alone the creepy ones ...

My wife has similar problems finding bras etc and she isn't close to H cup.

Looks like the comics authors have finally joined in the letters.

DLF, dogeyed, I'm talking about you.

Way to avoid mentioning

That the perpetrators where Aboriginal as well - was the cognitive dissonance too much?

Additionally this isn't some rednecked racist judge indulging in "Shameful neglect" - in the past she has been cited for her close connections with the aboriginal community and empathy for the aboriginal culture. This was a screwed up "cultural relativity" judgement.

The wider Australian culture has been shocked by this and is calling for an appeal, backed by the state premier and the prime minister (Rudd now, not Howard, thank god).

Aboriginal elders in the north, particularly the ones involved in the political process have a long history of abuse and corruption.

Do some reading before you jump to conclusions in the future. You're as bad as the neocons for projecting your own prejudices.

Original article: Viagra for women?

fetby offically a patronising brown noser

A man with sexual problems is pathetic, where as a woman with sexual problems is usually with a man who is pathetic.

Certainly laid out his position there - if there is a problem its the mans fault. No need to go any further than that. And how more dehumanising of women and men can you get than that. Not to mention his frantic hand jobs for salon writers and AKA Smith. Its nauseating to watch.

I've observed similar behaviour in disassociated young men desperate for recognition and affection from women. Socially awkward and alienated from their own sex, yet unable to relate to women as human beings they place them on a pedastal along with over the top displays of admiration (deserved or not) and "mea culparism" in the mistaken belief it will earn them respect.

Sad, very sad.
