There are probably as many voting gay Republicans as voting gay Democrats despite the GOP hype that all gays are liberals and deviants. Most of my wealthier gay friends, now fiercely anti-Bush, voted for Ronald Reagan. As to which GOP presidential candidate is more gay-friendly the vote would swing to Rudy Guiliani. But all these GOP candidates are down and out panderers if not hypocrites as they prostitute themselves in front of any right wing group they think they have to seduce in order to win the noimination. The only decent GOP candidate was Chuck Nagel of Nebraska but he has wisely bowed out of the race. Politics today it seems is no place for a man or woman with a conscience.
Good luck and success for Dan Rather in pursuing CBS for its complicity in supressing George W. Bush's National Guard service records. But what can we expect from today's media? The moguls who control most of the USA media today are right of center. Like all peas in the same pod, these big shots in the corporate world cluster together to protect the GOP and its siblings. Protecting "Baby" Bush is no exception. To publish the truth about any GOP darling is to invite the wrath of God. Stick to dumping on the godless Democrats has been the media's mantra since Clinton became President.
For that matter how did the L and B get in, too? Originally Gay men in the USA were the most politically loud activists going back to Franklin Kameny and moving onto the later post Stonewall era. This is not to say that Lesbians were not also active nor that bisexuality is a new phenomenon. As to the transgendered one could argue that historically eunuchs and transvestites - no newcomers historically-were their ancestors. But the four groups are not the same. Each group ought to have its own platform and socio/political agenda to lobby for. In this case what is good for the goose is not good for the gander as it dilutes the effectiveness of the group as a whole and makes the success of one dependent on the success of all. A hard pill to swallow and a difficult socio/political platform to push for. One could also make an argument that the basis for each in the LGBT grouping is not the same physically, biologically, psychologically, etc. What each does have in common is a sense of disenfranchisement, discrimination and marginalization by the majority society but for very different reasons.
I think Oprah has made more appearances in her short life than the alleged appearances of the Virgin Mary in the past 2000 years. Celebrities stay home and leave the common folk alone! You get enough publicity without stealing the little bit of well-earned praise that belongs to ordinary working guys and gals who freely, without stipends or paparazzi shadowing them compete in marathons and various walks for charity.
Dear World,
The truth is, sad to say, that "yellow" journalism and partisan editorials in the media have been with us since the days of Goerge Washington. Just look at the presidential smear campaigns between Thomas Jefferson and John Adams and don't forget the savaging of Andrew Jackson's wife in the print rags of his day. Newspapers and tv and radio media are owned and operated by today's powerful media moguls, some very public like R. Murdoch and some relatively unknown. But they all have an ax to grind and during the past seven years most of these moguls keep their sharp axes firmly in the hands of the GOP who relish hacking away at Democrats.
I for one was never a fan of the GOP-canonized Saint Ronald Reagan. Sure he was handsome, witty, oratorically-gifted and even at times a shrewd politician. But above all, Reagan was an actor and not a very good one at that. He decided when he jumped the Democrat ship to join the GOP that gaining money for himself and his GOP-like-minded buddies was more important than politics or ideology. He spied on his fellow actors during the Mc Carthy era. He publicly lied about his role in the Contra arms scandal and inspired the likes of Ollie North to rouse the "patriotic Right" in the USA. Tip O'Neil, former speaker of the House, once said that "Ronnie sleeps eighteen hours a day." Which meant that others like Jim Baker and Ed Meese were the ones running the show. Sounds like Dubya's stagecraft, doesn't it? He let the rich get richer and the less favored get poorer. He was credited with the fall of Communism when it was Pope John Paul II and the failed Russian economy that did in the Soviet Union. This emperor had no clothes but the current GOP presidential candidates seem not to notice.
Tim Russert masquerades as a centrist and a moderate. But he is just another GOP hack working for the big bucks. He has no conscience as any blogger who listens or watches Russert can attest to. "Rev." John Haggee is just another fat replica of Rush Limbaugh masquerading as a devout Christian. As to John McCain, see Dante's Inferno for what happens to liars and hypocrites.
Big deal! Good for Spitzer. When is America's media ever going to get over its sexual hangups and prurient interest in the sexual lives and foibles of public figures? When there are hints of hypocrisy, yes; otherwise; a very LOUD mind your own business. Spitzer should not resign!
