The GOP 'Book of Virtues'
[Read the article: The GOP's dwindling anti-gay parade]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]When gambling away the millions you earned hectoring your fellow citizens on their moral values, in blackjack always hit on 16.
When buying illegal drugs with the money you earned castigating hippies and other moral degenerates, send your maid instead.
When whipping up hysteria about non-existent WMD, make sure your own kids don't get drunk and accidentally join the military.
When paying for homosexual sex while campaigning against gay rights, remember that Viagra is way cheaper in the Caribbean.
No matter how much trouble you might get into, always remember the Costanza defense: it's not a lie, as long as YOU believe it.

It's the War, Steph
[Read the article: It's the war, stupid]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The mere fact that Democrats are not Republicans (Joe Lieberman notwithstanding) is enough at this point. Anything Nancy Pelosi and her colleagues in the House can do to stop the Bush-Cheney neo-fascism and restore the republic will be greatly appreciated.
Gerald Ford was not a great president; but his presence in office showed the world that America had survived that earlier attempt by the so-called Republicans to subvert the Republic, and has caused him to be remembered fondly by those of us of a certain age.
Corporate America is booming, as indicated by the stock market; and yes there are jobs available working for minimum wage and no benefits at places like Wal-Mart. Why the corporate media and people like Steph pretend to not see that Wall Street is booming precisely BECAUSE Main Street is hurting should be a mystery to no one at this point.
25,000 U.S. casualties (so far). A half-million or more dead Iragis and Afghans. Zero (0) WMD. Osama bin-Forgotten, and al-Qaeda still threatens the West, five years after 9/11. History will not be kind to the Bush-Cheney folks, regardless what happens next week.

WeikuBoy's Prediction
[Read the article: W. rocks the vote]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Democrats will be disappointed on Tuesday. They might (or might not) retake the House; but their victory will constitute at most a small wave, rather than a tsunami. The corporate media will quickly play down the notion of any sort of popular mandate regarding Iraq (or the multitude of other GOP scandals and failures). THEY will tell us that America remains hopelessly divided yet distrustful of liberals. WE will learn, once again, that New Yorkers and Californians do not count. The people in red state cities like Atlanta, Kansas City and Denver, do not count. Under the U.S. federal system, the only people whose votes really matter live in the rural areas of red states -- especially Virginia, Tennessee, and Missouri, this time around. The very same states that were the scenes of most of the fighting during the U.S. Civil War. (OK, Missouri not so much, because it, though a slave state, remained neutral; but still.) As long as THEY care mainly about protecting their guns (as OUR rights disappear), nothing will change, and "Cakewalk" Cheney and The Architect will prevail.
Prove me wrong this time around. Please.

Compassionate Conservatism
[Read the article: W. rocks the vote]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Tony, I lived in the heart of a "huge blue liberal" city during the Reagan years. The GOP cuts in social services resulted in (among other things) a lot of helpless destitute people with mental disabilities being dumped onto the streets of America's urban areas. Then a student, I kept irregular hours; and late at night or very early in the morning, when the city was otherwise quiet, they would howl -- literally howl, like wounded animals, suffering in the night. I'll never forget the sound of the Reagan Revolution.

How the Real America Can Stand Up
[Read the article: Will the real America please stand up?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I hope the Dems win big. More precisely, I hope the GOP loses HUGE. So much so, that even though I do not happen to live in a district or state that matters, I will go stand in line today for what I truly hope is not a meaningless electronic charade. In any event, I am not an I Told You So person, so let me say now, that if today is not all we hope it will be, here are three forms of civil disobedience that might possibly be used to force the small red states to give up their electoral superpowers and thereby bring democracy to America:
1. Stop Voting. Blue America, by turning its unified back on a fraud in which the 450,000 residents of Wyoming and its red brethren are given the same number of senators and up to four times the electoral college weight of California's 34 million, might de-legitimize the whole system and thereby force a move toward true democracy (one person, one vote).
2. General Strike. In the old Republic, when the Roman plebes had had enough with the selfishness and chicanery of the patrician ruling class, they would literally go sit on a hill outside the City. It was called "secessio" from which our words secede and secession are derived; and it was the forerunner of the European general strike. Perhaps it is time here.
3. Vote in Other Districts. If large numbers of voters who live in blue cities within red states were to register and vote in one or more carefully chosen suburban or rural district(s), our congressional delegations would more closely reflect and respect the wishes of ALL the voters in each state. If it's good enough for Ann Coulter, it should be good enough for us.
The absence of democracy, thus a Yoo-nited States government that neither reflects or respects the wishes of its people, is seriously harming America and the rest of the world.

Wow
[Read the article: "The Democrats are ready to lead"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Way to go, America! Things are looking up, after all. Nicely done. Carry on.
