Study details

There have been some studies looking into this before; some have looked at the preference as opposed to race, parental age or colouring, and it has been theorized that it might help preserve certain gene complexes. Bereczkei has done a study that has shown this sexual imprinting to be done in both genders.

The study had an original sample size of 81 (still not great), but after taking out those who only lived with stepfathers (this study was looking at biological parents, whereas Bereczkei has looked at adoptive fathers), those who didn't fully complete the survey or multiple sisters from the same family, only 49 were left.

They assessed facial similarity by looking at 11 cephalofacial characteristics as measured by trained anthropologists with callipers, then organized by factor analysis into four factors: Central face, Nose width, Lip width and Jaw width. Father-daughter relationship was measured by a survey on a 1-9 Likert scale, including questions about amount of leisure time fathers spent with daughters, emotional investment by the fathers and how much fathers engaged in bringing them up.

I have a pdf of the article and can give more details as requested.

Original article: Sonic Youth, meet Starbucks

Self-examination needed

Accusations of Faustian deals follow quickly after announcements like this, and they tend to ring hollow. Be it a signing to a major label or distributor, the choice to sell in chain stores or license materials for secondary use, bitter fans tend to selfishly prescribe their own desires onto the artists, with little regard for the others' own interests.

Besides, what's the worst that can happen? In this situation, maybe some people who wouldn't otherwise hear Sonic Youth get to hear what other fans like and read about why. I've never been opposed to that, the basic premise of music criticism in the first place. Without it, I probably would never have become a fan either. And fears of - gasp! - selling out? They turned out to be incorrect when the band signed to Geffen in the 1980s; why fear the executioner's blade now?

In these situations, fans need to carefully examine their own reactions and motivations before looking outside. The real question remains: Et tu, pasha1?

Bucking the norm?

I don't buy the argument, if only because I love cooking but have zero interest in a career in it or wowing people. I like being told I'm a good cook, sure. But I cook because it's a fun and creative way to do things with and for friends and family. Or just myself.

Then again, a quick look at my cookbooks reveals that the recipes and cooking I gravitate towards are all produced by women. A wonderful coincidence, I hope.

Original article: The iPhone bubble?

However...

A lack of significantly-above-retail eBay prices for the iPhone doesn't necessarily mean that there's a bubble. Instead, what I take from it is that either there seems to be enough stock, which might signal a deliberate effort to avoid undersupply and discourage price gouging on eBay, or that people are confident there will be. I'd never pay thousands for a game system or phone secondhand online, so I'm encouraged that maybe other people are making a similarly prudent choice.

But obviously sales aren't going to stay at the same rate consistently. They don't seem to for movies, music, books or most other new electronics, after all; why would it start now?

Ask not...

A pale comparison to the famous Kennedy line he's obviously imitating.
